Summer time food vouchers mean no extras next week | THE TERRACE Churches Food Bank won’t be able to dis- | tribute as much food next week as it would normally do be- cause of an extra effort made over the summer. Food bank vice president John Wiebenga says $20,vouch- ers good for July and August were handed out at its last dis~ tribution in May. The $6,500 cost of those vouchers means the bank doesn’t have enough money to provide an extra bag for people over: and above the basics next week, says Wiebenga. ‘ “We had that money sitting in a term [deposit] and we decided to use,it for the vouchers because it was donated to use for food,” he added. “But we'll still be able to provide the essentials next week and we know donations will come in so we'll be able to pro- vide the extra next month.” In total, the food bank distributed 450 vouchers worth, $9,000, resulting in a use rate of about 65 per cent, a figure _ Wiebenga says satisfies the food’ bank. “We were happy with that as more could have gotten Jost.” he said. The vouchers were usable at Save on , Foods and only: had ~avalué when presented for food, meaning that the food_bank ~was not out for the value of the vouchers riot turned in. The food bank is more than 20 years old and has 1 more> than a dozen churches supporting it in the form of donations _ of.cither cash or food and in volunteers to operate it. Warmer weather It runs from October to May each year with the exception of December as that’s the month for the Salvation Army’s Christmas hamper program. Wiebenga said the vouchers were dated for July and Au- gust because the bank thought that’s when they would most be needed. Next week’s distribution takes place from Oct. 16 to Oct. 19 in the downstairs area of a former church on Lazelle Ave. and the use of the space and utilities is donated by current (owner Don Highe.: Wiebenga says donations of food and cash slow down over the summer months but pick up again once the food bank opens °.p. “I know that some churches have already had collections and we'll be grateful when they do come in so.we're not worried,” he said. A,typical bag can contain hamburger, rice, oats and other staples with more going to those with families, . The food bank is also a member of a national food bank organization, meaning it qualifies for shipments of food items declared surplus by corporations. . Recent shipments, trucked up from the south at no charge by Bandstra,’include Gatorade, breakfast cereal bars and protein drinks. “We also received soup in Tetra Packs - ‘enough soup 0) that we'didn't have to go out and buy some this time,” said Wiebenga. trend continues into the first: portion of the fall ; SEPTEMBER’ S WEATHER set a record for a daily ‘maximum and one for rain for a month that generally had — warmer temperatures than normal.
