A12- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 4, 2001 Regional- district is divided on saddle club grant request TAXPAYERS IN Terrace, Thornhill, Lakelse Lake and even Kitamaat Village could be paying $30,000 to help the Totem Saddle Club build an indoor arena al the Thornhill fall fair grounds. But the District of Kiti- mat won’t be contributing, thanks to a generous offer from Terrace mayor Jack Talstra who also sits on the Kitimat Stikine regio- nal district board. After much discussion on whether Kitimat would be included, the board agreed March 24 that just Terrace and. electoral areas C and E would pay. The money is condi- tional on the saddle club getting federal grants to caver two-thirds of the pro- jected $320,000 cost: for the building, which would be used for horse riding events, logging trade shows and other activities. Terrace would be prepared to pick that up and drop Kitimat.” Talstra had earlier failed to-convince Thom and Monaghan of the club’s regional appeal. Monaghan said she had to check with her district council first. “IT can’t support this,” director Jim Thom said “I don’t see it as being regio- nal.” Kitimat council has since denied the request. The board was under a tight timeframe in approv- ing the conditional grant as it had to approve its 2001 budget the same day. A month earlier, Ter- race directors on the Kiti- mat-Stikine board agreed to pay $25,000 to the Kiti- Joanne Monaghan mat-based Snow Valley Nordic Ski Club. Talstra wanted to know why the saddle club’s re- quest was different. “The cross country ski trails are right in the mid- dle of the two communi- ties,” Monaghan told Tal- stra. “This is way in Terrace.” Kitimat also has its own saddle club, she added. Jack Talstra The Snow Valley Nor- dic Ski Club claims a 40 per cent membership base in Terrace, “The Nordic Ski Ciub has made a conscious ef- fort to regionalize,” Thom added. -That club operates the Onion Lake Ski Trail and it also wants federal money for lights and for a caretaker.
