NEWCOMERS TO TENNIS

Beginners lessons begin
Monday, May 9 at the Kalum
St. courts with Richard Kriegl,
one of the northwest’s top
players, as instrucior.
Participanis will learn about
the serve, forearm and back-
hand shots as well as the ‘‘ball
sense” that’s an integral part
of playing the game.
. For those who have a
grounding in the game, Krieg]
is also offering an Intermediate
‘program. This targets players
who, having mastered the
basics, want to refine their
‘skills and improve their overall
game.
‘The lessons take place every
Monday night from May 9 to
June 20 with the exceplion of
the May 23 holiday. Beginners
‘Flake to the court at 6:30 p.m.,
intermediates at 7:45 p.m. The
cost is $28 for the six sessions.

Games invite

TERRACE HAS been invited
to once again host the Norther
B.C, Winter Games.

The Games society has of-
fered the city a shot at the 1997
‘Tedition of the event A
‘}preliminary outline of Ter-
race’s bid has to be submitted
by May 20 and the society will
make a final decision in Sep-
tember.

Tne city has hosted the
Northern B.Cs twice since
they were introduced in 1973,
the most recent being three
years ago. Last year the city
decllined to bid on the 1996
I NBCWo. are
Although council’s recrea-
tion committee will consider
ihe matter at its next meeting, |
it’s unlikely a decision will be |
made until the recreation ad-
visory commission has its say.

Race dates

SKEENA VALLEY Run-
ners’ club has settled on dates
for two of its annual races.

The Kermodei Classic will
take place Saturday, May 28
with the traditional 1km, 5 km
and 10km events. The start
will be on the 4600 black of
Lakelse and follow the same
routes as last year.

The King of the Mountain
Footrace will take place July
24, starting and finishing at the
arcna with a climb of Terrace
Mountain in between.

Club spokesman Marilyn
Earl said the RCMP are once
again being asked for their ad-
vice on traffic control at both
events and the Roadrunners
Motorcycle club will be on
hand to ensure the safety of the
racers. :

City council last week gave
the club the go-ahead for both
events and any short-term road

THE 1994 GOLF season official-
ly gets underway today with the
first Men’s Night.

And, says Skeena Valley Golf
and Country club manager Bruce
Carruthers, golfers will find the
course in excellent shape once
again.

“We came through with no
winter kill,’ he said, adding all
regulation tees and greens will be
in use.

The driving range is still a little
{00 wet to be used al the moment,
but Carruthers said it shouldn’t be
long before that’s open as well.

Coming off a very successful
93 season, the club expects more
of the same given it already has a
record 119 members paid up.

season for Dr. Peter Hoy and.

Graham Kay, a new member:
their names were drawn at the an-
nual wine and cheese launch
eaming them a 50 per cent rebate
on their dues.

The club is also gearing up for
some major changes to Ihe course
itself. Those involve realigning
the number 3 and 4 holes so they
fit in with the long range plan for
an 18-hole course,

Other plans for this year include
repainting the clubhouse and
lackiing problems with the build-
ings water supply.

As for that much anticipated ox-
pansion of the course, Carruthers
said the back nine had been
centre-lined now and Golf Design
Services personnel would be
coming back in to check it out
and map out the next stage.

Although it’s early to be
making predictions on such a
major project, Carruthers was
hopeful some clearing could be-
