‘remember Yvonne as the pimp

¥vonne Kelly

- Some of the sunshine and
happiness has gone out of Ter-
race. Yvonne Kelly, whose
cheerful face was more familiar
than the mayor's to most people
in Terrace, died unexpectedly
last week.

Yvonne Marlene Kelly died on
Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7:56 a.m.
She suffered a cardiac arrest
while hospitalized for the flu
and dehydration. Hospital staff
_ tried for an hour to revive her,
to no avail. Yvonne was 38 years
old and had been born in Port
Simpson.

Most people in Terrace will

little lady, always ready with a
bright smile and a hello to
everyone. Yvonne was mentally
disadvantaged and a participant
in Terrace and District Com-
munity Services Choices pro-
gram since September 1987,
The Choices program pro-

vides services to mentally handi- |
capped adults and children. It

runs group homes and. assists

clients through life-skills’

workers who run a self-help pro-
gram to teach independent living
skills to these people. Yvonne
Kelly worked part-time at Ter-
race Esso doing janitorial work.
Yvonne was conscientious,
hard-working and loyal to her
employer, even when she was of-
fered higher pay elsewhere.

Her favorite activities were
riding her bicycle and belonging
to the Social Credit party. Chris
Shaffer, Dave Parker’s parlia-
mentary assistant, describes
Yvonne; ‘‘She always seemed to
be very aware. She’d stop by
weekly to see how Dave was do-
ing. She’s let us know what was
going on in the community. She
was always there. She was just a
part of us. She’ll be missed.’’

Yvonne went to the opening
of every business and every
social event, She never missed
the monthly Happy Gang break-
fasts or the Sea Fest in Prince
Rupert. She loved music, and
especially liked the perform-
ances at the new band shell in

Lower Little Park. She attended

every soccer and hockey game.
She played Special Olympics
bowling every Saturday. The
minister who conducted the
funeral for Yvonne last Friday
described her vivacious manner

workers thought api, ‘‘She
would burst onto the scene.”

was important, especially birth-

days and. Christmas. Yvonne:
had the most elaborate Christ- .

Christmas. She : loved pretty
things — the flowers in her

‘garden and everyone else’s; her
house was immaculate. She was _
always rearranging the fur-

niture. Then she would phone
one of her workers or another
friend and say she had a special

surprise that they just had to see. °

Everyone at Terrace and
District Community Services
loved her, They loved her zest
for life. ‘She lived it to the
fullest,” agreed her workers
Avril, Linda and Wendy. She
was very sensitive, loving and in-

_ terested in everyone. Nothing

made her happier than an un-
expected visit. Yvonne always
had a pot of tea and perhaps
some donuts ready for her

visitors. She loved to cook and
had an excellent memory for .,.

recipes. Once she’d been shown,

sodium and later, potassium, i in-

-travenously. Just before 8 a.m.,

Tuesday, Yvonne:::Kelly died.
The autopsy results’ indicated
that-the cause of death was ‘‘un-
determined by gross findings’’.
After discussion with Terrace

coroner Jim Lynch; Choices-

program coordinator Linda

of Terrace’ Ss favorites

Pellétier says that Lynch will
make a written recommendation
that mentally handicapped peo-
ple be given an advocate or con-
tact person to act on their behalf
upon admittance to hospital.

Terrace and -District Com-

munity Services would really like

to see a volunteer group formed ©
to meet the social needs of their -

clients — someone to drop in for

tea or to take a client to a:movie. °

-Many of the clients use bicycles,

out .on-them after dark.

Residents opt for van

A donation of $500 : from
Skeena Sawmills will be used as
the foundation of a fund for
buying a new van, the residents’
council of the Terraceview
Lodge has decided.

The money was given to the
council by sawmill manager Don
Chesley as a contribution to the
Lodge’s Christmas fundraising
drive, Chesley specified that it

had to go directly to the

residents. The council voted on -

the issue during the second week
in January, and mobility won
the day.

The rest of the money re-
quired to buy a new vehicle will
come from other fund raising
activities.

“Skeena Sawmills raised the
money by selling reject lumber
for donations. —

Yvonne had lived on her own
for quite a few years. Her most
recent home was in the Sunnyhill

Trailer Court, where she had liv- 2am

was alone at home when she fell
ill a week ago Friday.
