Terrace Tourism, 2 future alternative for Terrace TERRACE — Tapping into the tourism trade could be a boom in- dustry for Terrace. At least that is the opinion of Bryan Owen, local fishing and guide tour operator. He said more promotion is re- quired to inform travel- lers of local attractions. In his estimation, more money has to be spent by the provincial government to encour- age tourists heading north to Alaska to stop south of the U.S. des- tination. ‘‘The fishing industry in the northwest hasn’t been promoted,”’ Owen said. The amount of money the tourism department in the United States spends advertising Alas- ka makes it difficult for northwest residents: to compete. ‘‘We don’t rec- ognize our potential,”’ Owen said. Fishing in the north- west is an industry that is going to grow, but to do that, more fishing lodges have to be built on local rivers, Owen said. Peo- ple coming to the area are looking for a wilderness experience and that includes alter- nate accommodations which fishing lodges pro- vide, ‘‘We want to com- pete with Alaska,’’ Owen said, pointing out that a winning promo- tional item is the steel- head fishing available in this area. “That’s what we have that no one else has.”’ We have the largest fresh water steelhead caught in the world, Record size steelhead have been taken from the Skeena River on spin- ning tackle and fly rods. ‘We hold the fresh water world record for the largest steelhead caught on both spinning tackle and the fly rod.” Owen said there is lots of room for other guides. in the area who can create their own employ- ment. ‘‘Success breeds success”? Most of Owen’s clien- tele come from the United States and he said the market remains vir- tually untapped. A vast Japanese and European market still remains to be explored, he added, - Owen said that there are approximately 275,000 people who live in Anchorage, Alaska, and on a weekend, he estimates up to 15,000 people fish the river when Chinook salmon are running. Over 200 guides work the Kenai River in Alaska com- pared to a handful of operators on the Skeena, which is the second largest river in B.C. It features the largest fresh water summer run of steelhead in the world. “Tt certainly is not crowded, which is one of our big drawing cards,” Owen said. | On the 90-mile stretch along the Skeena from Terrace to Hazelton, there is limited boat launch access to the river, so few people fish the waterway. Tourists fly over us and drive through to Alaska to go fishing as unique local attractions have not been promoted enough, Owen said. His tour guiding company promotes a catch and re- lease fishing program to ensure survival of the wild stocks. The real problem, Owen said, is the number of steelhead taken by commercial fishermen who are after other species. ‘I think we should do everything in our power to keep the wild stocks,’’ Owen said. back In the 20’s when there Complete electronics Westinghouse Quasar T.V. was only, one block of pave- # repair services - Sales & Service VCA ment. “It's changed a great.
