No. 48, The Omineca Miner has the largest bona lidd circulation of any newapaper in the Northern Interior of British Columbia. Hazelton’s Dominion Day celebration will be, in ali probability, the best of the many similar events which have taken place here. IL will alford indisputable evidence, to the large crowd of visitors which will attend, that Hazelton jis not only still on the map, but that it is by far the liveliest town in the Northern Interior. A capable committee has matle adequate arrangements for the entertainment of all who come to town, and the program of games and sports provides something of and evening. The people of the intereat for every hour of the day town will welcome all visitors, from near and far, and wil! do their best to make the day an enjoyable one. Naval Emergency St. John, N.B. dune 23 :-- “Battleships of the dreadnought class cannot be built in Canada for upwards of twenty-five years,’’ said T. J. Drummond of the Canada Iron Corporation, who arrived in the city yester- day, ‘‘Ittook the Japanese ful- ly that length of time, while I understand the plans for the battleshios of the United States navy were loaned to that country by Great Britain. “There ig an emergency, and it isof vilal necessity that the $35,000,000 be paid to the mother country, “Tf we cannot pay our fare we had better get off the car,” said Mr. Drummond, “Those who say that shipbuild- ing yards which could aceommo- date a dreadnought could be erected in Canada in two and a half or three year's do not know what they are talking about, In the first place the plans would have to be borrowed from Eng- land, together with the naval architects and skilled workmen, and then it would take years be- fore the ships could be built on a sound business basis. “The initial cost of the plant would be enormous, and only after it was completed could small eruisers and merchant steamers be built, although even this effort would prove difficult. “It ig net small ships that Engiand needs at present, how- ever, but dreadnoughts, or the money to build them.”? The Road Question Foreman Schooling and his road crew are drawing nearer ta Smithers. They have effected a great improvement in the read between Teikwa and the town. There is pressing need for re- pairs on the road west of §mith- ers, but itis unlikely the funds at present available will suffice todo anything on that section. An effort is being made tosecure a special appropriation for the work, and it is the hopeof every- one interested in the district that the money will be forthcoming. --The Review, A “Midsummer Yarn Fresno, June 20.—Fred Wil- liams, a farmer of McFarland, near Bakersfield, brought to Fres- no today for the purpege of hav- ing it assayed a chunk from a meteor, which he says he discov-| ered on his ranch, ata depth of sixteen feet, while digging al well. The chunk has the appearance! of solid gold. Williams was un- able to find an assayer but took the chunk to a number of lecal jewelers, erystalized gold. Williams says the mass must weigh at least twenty tons. It is-only about an inch and a half thick. Following the declarations of ithe jewelers, Williams is now janxious to secure a verdict from an assayer as to the value of this sample of the meteor, Discussing the find today, the farmer stated that he would re- tire on his means should it be found that the rest of this gi- gantic meteor was all crystalized gold and of considerable value. In the meantime Williams’ wife is guarding the homestead and the twenty ton meteor, although by any sneak thief. Telkwa Celebration AtTelkwa on Dominion Day there will be a good program of sports, and the town at the june- tion of the rivers should draw a large number of visitors, The baseball team will be in Hazelton but as the Hazelton and New Hazelton teams are scheduled ta play at Telkwa during the fall fair, the people of the latter town are not grumbling over the arrangement. ---The Review, C.
