ANTI-SEMITISM INCREASES. RCMP ‘investigate’ while Nazis active Under pressure of an outraged public (in particular, the Jewish community) RCMP are investigat- ing an incident which took place recently in Winnipeg Beach, 50 miles north of Winnipeg. When the summer season at the beach opened on June 30, two “youths’”” drove through the streets of the town in a car plast- ered with anti-semitic slogans. At the same time, a loudspeaking system in the auto advised all ‘within earshot: “This is Adolph Eichmann speaking . . . all Jews are ordered off the streets!”’ The local RCMP detachment, headquartered in Winnipeg Beach, announced on July 6 that it had “investigated” the incident for an entire week and had arrived at the conclusion that “‘this was a lark, and not a serious act of racial intolerance.” The Jewish organizations B’nai Brith and Canadian Jewish Con- gress are far from satisfied with the Mounties’ ‘‘explanation’”’ and are themselves conducting an in- _vestigation into the affair. A somewhat similar incident occured in the city of Winnipeg on July 9. A man with a fistful of folding money walked into Strain’s Cam- era Shop on Portage’ Ave., and proceeded to appeal to staff and customers alike to join the Nazi Party of Canada. He attacked a clerk in the store, insisting that the clerk wear a red armband with the nazi emb- lem—a black swastika on a white background. He also took several rolls of film, bragging that he wanted to take pictures of a nazi party meeting in the city that evening. Clerk George Gold stated that the man threatened him with a pair of scissors and ‘‘acted like a madman.” The police later suspect in connection incident. arrested a with the Prior to Cenfederation the name of the province of Ontario was Canada West, officially given to it by the Act of Union of 1841.
