For peace an COMMUNIST PARTY MAY DAY APPEAL pas = eA ‘0: Danger, troops at work Greek democracy under attack Following the army takeover in Greece last Thursday, the Communist Party of Canada sent the following telegram to External Affairs Minister Paul Martin: “Shocking attack on Greek democracy, widely believed to have been engineered by the CIA, calls for a sharp condemna- tion by the Canadian government, Canada must refuse to recognize this military dictatorship, Our responsibility is all the greater because we have permitted ourselves to be allied with Greece in NATO.” Another wire to the Greek ambassador in Ottawa sharply protests the army coup and condemns persecution of Greek patriots, The Army regime in Greece continued mass arrests of progressives this week following the military coup last Thursday to head off the coming Greek elections at which the democratic forces in the country were expected to win an overwhelming majority. Many of those arrested have been shipped off to the barren, rocky island of Gavdos. A spokesman for the regime denied reports that 8,500 people had already been seized, but officials would not say how manyarrests had taken place since the Army seized power, George Papandreou, 79-year-old former Premier and leader of the Centre Union Party which had been expected to win in the coming May 28 election, was arrested in the first hours of the coup and is reported tobe in hospital under guard. In 1965, King Constantine and the Greek right ousted the elected Papandreou government because it wanted to remove plotting right wing top officers from the forces, The coup staged last Thursday night was prepared long in advance, High army officers began banding together two years ago, a spokesman for the regime admitted. It was learned that on Friday, the first day of the coup, the King, together with Gen, Spandidakis, Army Chief of Staff, and Deputy Premier in the army regime, drove to the country home of Queen Mother Frederika, the former Hitler Youth member whose interference in Greek politics has frequently stirred the wrath of the Greek people. A foreign correspondent reported after meeting with a spokesman for the regime in Athens that the coup was led by a group of young staff officers who wanted to set up a regime patterned on the Franco and Salazar governments in Spain and Portugal, Protests against the military dictatorship and demands for immediate release of all political prisoners should be addressed to: His Excellency Aristide N, Pilavachi, Ambassa- dor of Greece, Chateau Laurier Hotel, Suite 110, Ottawa 2, April 28, 1 967—PACIFIC TRIBUNE—Page 12 West Coast edition, Canadian Tribune SUBSCRIBE NOW TO B.C.’S FIGHTING LABOR PAPER! Pacitie Tribune On the occasion of labor’s international holiday — May Ist — the Committee of the Communist Party addressed the following message fo Cane working people: May Day has become sanctified as the international day'of labor when working men and women review past events, draw plans for the future and demonstrate their unity and solidarity in the struggle to achieve abetter life in apeace= ful world, This year May Day has a special significance, Flaunting world public opinion United States imperialism is_ continuing and extending its war of aggression against the people of Vietnam. Instead of ending its bombings as a means of opening up negotiations, the U.S. government pursues a policy of genocide and scorched earth, Its aim is not a just peace but dom- ination of Indo-China and control of Southeast Asia, Unfortunately the Canadian government still refuses to speak out against this criminal policy when it should be uniting with all other peace-loving countries and peoples’in a united demand that the U.S. government end its bombing of Vietnam and begins serious negotiations with. the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the South Vietnam National Liberation Front. United States imperialist policy is taking the world to the precipice, But peace can be preserved if labor in Canada unites with labor throughout the world to end this criminal policy. At home labor is faced with new problems and challenges. Monopoly is trying to place shackles on labor by laws which would replace the right to strike with compulsory arbitration. Pressures are being mounted to force workers to accept a form of wage freeze while profits and prices continue to soar. Certainly there is need for changes in labor laws to conform with the needs ofthe technological and scientific revolution, But they must be changes which restrict ALL OUT TO MAY DAY RALLY Pender Auditorium 339 W.
