the king to that of a constitu-
tional monarch and to democra-
tize the army. For this he was
removed as prime minister by
the king in July 1965 and in a
sense the present developments
stem from that time.

The right wing has found it
increasingly difficult to govern.
Strikes, peasant demonstrations,
opposition of a part of the Greek
capitalists, accentuated the con-
tradictions. And in December,
when it became obvious that the
right-wing regime could no
longer hold on, elections for May
were announced.

It has been obvious since then
that to allow the elections to go
forward in a democratic manner
would only once again result in
victories for the centre and left,
probably even greater than in
1964,

In a statement issued last
January the Communist Party
of Greece pointed out:

“Contrary to its allegations
that it wants to hold fair elec-
tions, the government is out to
create, under the slogan of ‘pro-
moting order and peace’, condi-
tions in which it can falsify the
will of the people. That is why
it says nothing about abolishing
the emergency measures, refuses
to disarm and disband the Na-
tional -Security Battalions, re-
place the monarchs and chiefs
of police by magistrates and af-
ford every party equal opportu-
nities for the election campaign
and for freedom of movement.

“The gulf separating the court -

and the people has widened. The
antagonisms inside the National
Radical Union (rightist party)
and other Rightist parties and
groups have increased and
grown sharper.

“Mass actions by the people
and political shifts and realign-
ments provide a solid: basis and
open up favorable prospects for
the popular and democratic
movement.”

It is this growing mass move- —

ment that is of course what the
king and army feared.

Will democracy be

Germany, called on Greek work-
ers to resist the new regime.

He said that there is an oli-

garchy of about 1,000 families in .

Athens who control 40 percent
of the national income. “They
realized that the elections would
be their downfall,” he said.

Expressions of support for the
Greek workers have been heard
throughout the world. In Paris
many important personages is-
sued a statement condemn-
ing the action of the king and
army. They included Socialist
leader Guy Mollet, Communist
leader Waldeck Rochet, and
actor Yves Montand and actress
Simone Signoret.

In Britain, nearly 400 march-
ed over the weekend before the
Greek embassy in London carry-
ing posters which demanded:
“Restore Democracy in Greece.”

The central executive of the
Communist Party of Canada sent
wires to Minister of External Af-
fairs Paul Martin and to the Am-
bassador of Greece to. Canada.
In the former they called for
sharp condemnation by the Can-
adian government of the attack
on the Greek government and
state that “(Canada must refuse
to recognize this military dicta-
torship.” To the ambassador they
said: “Sharply protest the coup
of reactionary army forces
against Greek democracy. Can-
adian and world opinion will-nct
stand for the persecution of
Greek patriots fighting for free-
dom and: democratic govern-
ment.”

The day following the coup
the Communist Party of. Greece
issued a declaration in which
they declared that there was an
open monarchal-fascist dictator-
ship established.

“Greeks,” it says, “regardless
of the diversity of opinions, we
are appealing to you to give
proof of our national dignity,
by imposing your ‘no’ to this dic-
tatorship.”

The statement continues: “The
people possess sufficient strength
to stay the hand of the perpe-
trators of the coup dretat, to
reverse the tyranny, to restab-
lish democratic order. The mili-
tary dictatorship will not go on.
Greece is not an isolated island,
left to the mercy of the aggres-
sive imperialist circles. Interna-
tional public opinion, the peace-
ful forces of democracy and
progress in the entire world will
prevent the liquidation of democ-
racy in the country where it was
born, will not allow Greece to
be transformed into a neo-fascist
place d’armes with the prospect
of future military adventures of
imperialism in Europe.”

The main issue of the elec-
tion had been “who is to rule
Greece: the king or the people?”
In the fight against the fascist
military dictatorship that ques-
tion, too, will be decided.  —

and the abolition of the official Falangist labor syndicates. The

HE 50th birthday meeting
for Morton Sobell, des-
cribed by his wife as “a

new and glowing involvement
of man with man,” brought to-
gether about 1,000 people at
Hunter College Assembly Hall
in New York last week.

Mrs. Sobell related the re-
sponsibility of those present, not
only to one man in particular,
but to all mankind, saying:
“With the billions of dollars we
pour into war we could become
the healer, the teacher.”

Speaking of her husband, she
continued: “It is necessary to
free a man from the medieval
torture of. 17 years in prison.
Strength can be found to make
each day a witness to truth...

“On his 50th birthday, we say:
Long life to you Morton Sobell,
for you have not given up for
one day the struggle for justice.
You have won because you have
remained a living, thinking, res-
ponsive human being — and
through your living have taught
us how to win.”

Three atomic scientists spoke.
They were Dr. Phillip Morrison,
M. I. T. physics professor; Dr.
Harold C. Urey, Nobel prize
winner, and Dr. Henry Linschitz,
University of California profes-
sor of chemistry.

In speaking of Sobell’s trial
held in an atmosphere of Mc-
Carthyism, Morrison asked,
“Where were the people who
knew the truth? Few could be
found at the crucial time of the
trial — and I include myself.
There was a myth around sec-
rets. The defense was isolated
by fear...

“The bitter lesson we have
learned is our responsibility to
the truth?”

Linschitz showed a slide of
the A-bomb sketch drawn by
David Greenglass which the gov-
ernment used as_ evidence
against Sobell.

Giving a scientific analysis as
to why the sketch was meaning-
less as evidence, Linschitz said:
“The drawing is incorrect in
crucial details and the essential
information needed to make
clear the principle of initiating
a chain reaction ‘in plutonium is
not given.”

Linschitz concluded: “The A-
bomb came as a shock to the
world, led to fear and anti-com-
munist hysteria which led to the
failure to look at the situation
objectively. Fear and hatred
led to injustice. The errors were
moral and tragic. We must do
what can be done to rectify
them. Our national conscience
must be expressed.”

Urey declared that Sobell has
been imprisoned for a crime he
did not commit.

Mrs. Rose Sobell, mother of
Morton Sobell, told of a recent
visit with her son: “He looked
well. I felt elated and thought
what a wonderful man that Mor-
ton Sobell is—he has a trust
in humanity that justice will
prevail.”

“Mama, be optimistic,” she
quoted him as saying.

She concluded, “In the corner
of your mind there is always
hope — after defeat — you re-
gain trust and optimism.”
