THE FOURTH INTERNATIONAL CERAMICS SYMPOSIUM - EDGES; In Thought. In Hiatory. In Clay. Toronto. Oct.17-20., 1985. Five hundred participants will come together to probe the state of ceramic art through attendance at leetures by leading ceramists, historians and eritics. There will be special presentations and tours of the City's public collections and contemporary exhibitions of ceramic art at approximately 40 of the leading public art galleries, museums and private galleries. The International Ceramics Symposiums were founded in the United States in 1979 by the Institute for Ceramic History headed by ceramic art historian Garth Clark. The first symposium was held in Syracuse, New York in conjunction with thea Everson Museum exhibition, A Century of Ceramics in the United States: 1878 - 1978, The 1981 symposium was held in New York City and the third in 1983 in Kansas City, Missouri. It is believed that a significant portion of the conference delegation for 1985 will be from countries outside Canada. The programme is directed towards the recognition of ceramic artists, past, present and future, who have challenged and changed the format of the vessel and the figures. The presentations will have an international focus.
