He believes there is a real need for the views of the average person’ to represented on council. What issues concern him? * Projects and developments in Terrace must be in the best interest of the: community’s long-range plan and not the self-interest of a few. * A recycling program must be developed to reduce the im- Pact on our resources and waste going into the landfill site. This has not been an easy task : to date and will not be any easier in the future; but with hard work, perseverance and dedication we can continue to serve existing clients while developing new ones. One of the most important in- itiatives undertaken by council was the trade mission to south- ‘east Alaska, a region of im- measurable trade possibilities, Shames Mountain is coming on stream and Mount Layton Hotsprings continues to ex- pand. The possibility of Terrace as a regional tourism: destina- tion provides almost unlimited, service sector potential. Free trade also opens opportunities for the industrial and commer- cial sector, In the next three years council must find innovative ways to ex- pand our industrial-commercial base. We must also look seriously at the environment — clean air and .water, waste disposal, landfill- sites and recycling. co Social and low-cost, affor- dable housing, conven- tion/community centre, brary expansion, art gallery, second Sheet of ice and others require consideration in the coming years..We must decide what is important to us and what we can afford, ., district offices at 635-7251. - Electoral Area A —~ I, has been returned unopposed for this area which includes the Nass Valley and extends’ north to take in Meziadin Junction, © 0 -* - Electoral Area B : —~ Incumbent HARRY } YCE — Newcomer-FRED ROISUM clamation to. represent residents as Thornhill director. : ' The remainder of the regional district board is made up of members of Terrace {two directors), Kitimat (two), Stewart (one), and Village of Hazelton (on New Hazelton (ane) 2) councils. Danny Sheridan Elected to council in 1987, Danny Sheridan believes the issues are: ; * Amalgamation with Thor- nhill — it offers the benefits of co-ordinated planning, a greater tax base, joint usage of services (e.g. sewage treatment plant) and an increase in population statistics for calculating money the community receives from different agencies and groups {proper negotiation with the province should ensure a for- mula beneficial to both the city the outlying areas. * Capital projects — We must proceed to design and costing stages on the com- munity/conference centre, the library expansion or including it as part of the centre and another ice surface to enable us to increase figure skating’ and minor hockey training functions ‘arid hott toureaaee Dart of ‘économic development for the community. *Waste ‘management/Recycling — council has to seriously look at this problem. We only have 10 years’ capacity left at the tand- fill site, Recycling has to be part of the solution. We cannot just sit and wait for other levels of government to do something. ® Seniors’ services — This will continue to be a serious economic development function in this city. We need to attract this segment of society and con- vince them Terrace is where they should retire. Aside from the dollar benefit to the com- munity, it provides us with very talented people with 2 wealth of knowledge and available time to contribute to its needs. My wife, my son and I have settled into Terrace and I would like to see this city continue to -be one of the best communities in British Columbia to raise a family or operate a ‘business. Recreation facilities, a strong economic base and safe streets are all important facets of a city that is a good place to live. . A number of people in Ter- tace know me to be an “action” person..On many occasions | have listened to citizens raising valid: concerns, but too ooften they. are aired only over coffee a ae or on the street. ‘Those same people would like to have a voice on the city coun- cil but do not feel that some of the incumbents are ap- proachable or action-oriented.
