X-country club growing | INITIALLY, CROSS- COUNTRY skiers in Kitimat were members of the Alpine Club, but increasingly found that their interests and fund raising conflicted with those of the down hill enthusiasts. _ Therefore, in the mid- seventies, members. decided to branch off and form their own Club. The Kitimat Cross Couniry Ski Club was formed and in- corporated in October 1976. The purpose of the club was to promote cross-country skiing and altract other enthusiasts. Ski touring was organized for both novice and advanced sklers and instruction was provided. As the club grew, so did its aspirations, atid through a lot of hard work, trails were estab- lished at the Kitimat Golf Course and Onion Lake, Racing was also promoted with such events as the Kitimat Open and Alcan Marathon becoming annual events. A junior race team was formed two years ago with a masters team beginning this season. _ In the 15 years of ils in- corporation, the Kitimat Cross Country Ski Club has accom- plished a great deal to benefit not only the community of Kitimat, but Terrace and sur- rounding areas as well. The Kitimat Golf Course trails are the most well used trails to date in Kitimat. These are lit trails and are actively used by Jackrabbits and resi~ dents alike, The Onion Lake Trails are an extensive (25 kan) ski area lo- cated between Terrace and Kitimat on Hwy37, Developed by the Kitimat Ciub with the help of several Terrace residents, this area provides a more extended ski scason and a grealer variety of terrain, The addition of a Piston Bul- ly 220D snow grooming ma- chine in 1992 has added great- ly to the cross-country skiing enjoyment at the Onion lake Trails. In addition to providing cross-country skiing facilities and training, the club also organizes and hosts ski tours in the winter and hikes in the summer throughout the Ter- tace/Kitimat region. The futwe of the Kitimat Cross Country Ski Club looks bright. It continues to develop the Onion Lake Ski Trails with a day lodge planned for the fu- ture. Ski instruction is provided to members on Saturdays mom- ings at the Onion Lake facility. Racers continue to train and do well in regional and provincial competitions. - This season the Kitimat Open Cross Country Ski Race will be on Januaty 8, 1994 and the Marathon held February 13, 1994. . Become a member of the club and enjoy terrific cross- country skiing! Contributed by the Kitimat Cross Country Ski Club. CROSS COUNTRY skiers are hoping the Farmer’s Almanac is right about this winter: colder than normal and more precip, as in snow. It'll be a while yet before the snow blankets the Onion Lake flats, but once it does the trails there are sure to be busy. The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 10, 1993 - B15 New slope awaits Shames Mt. skiers WHEN DOWNHILLERS hit the slopes at Shames Mt. this winter, they'll find a new run has been added. As yet unnamed, the 120ft. wide Irail runs parallel to Back Eddy, beginning at the bottom of Kermodej Kut and exiting on to the ski-out from AQT and Hangover. It's classified as an interme- diate run and wil! be groomed. The new trail fits in with the emphasis Shames is putting on developing intermediate runs. That’s because most skiers fall into that category and begin- ners can quickly advance to that level wilh just a few les- SOmS. For those who already enjoy skiing the Kermodci Kut and Back Eddy, it should be an ex- citing addition, particularly since No-name offers a little more fall line skilng. Other rails have been widened over ihe summer, some by as much as forty feet. They include Southpaw, Kermodei Kut and Stem- wheeler. , © 3 year, 72,000 kilometer comprehensive warranty .-© 2year, 24 hour roadaide |, emergency asaislance _ is §iletime.anil-corroaion: “perforation warranty Dewar may sol! for lowe * undercoating and rust proofing FGANABR'S LOWEST PRICED 4X4 LADA NIVA 1.6L 4X4 Included {reight, ROL, laxes oxine - Balt Benevolent and Protective Order of Els of Canada TERRACE, LODGE NO, 495 “Hub of the North” ATTENTION Through the public support of our Northern B.C. residence of the F.EM.
