Weekly REV, VERNON LUCHIES Church discipline is not so much a “ticklish” subject as a painful one. ft is about as important as Johnny's spanking — and sure- ly ag necessary, Church members need spankings too. Bishop Fulton has said: “There is nothing that devel- ops character so much as a pat. on the back, provided that it is given often enough, hard enough’ and low enough. Spanking is one of the most easily understood lessons in the world .. . It is quick, clean-cut, clears the air, allows no long periods of dis- favor...” . Why are many churches only half full? Why do women out: number the men — the elderly the young? One big reason is lack of church discipline, Churches still allow their so-called members to be “members in good standing’ when they aren't “standing” at all! An influential ‘business man, who was finally soundly converted to Christ, confessed that long be. fore, a certain easy-going church warmly accepted him as a member though he never showed up. Said he, “They extended te me the Tight hand of fellowship — when what I really needed was a kick in the pants!" But should the Church not be happy to accept anyone as member who {fs willing to place his mem- bership with them? Surely not — if this means his “papers” without his person. Do we really believe we can be in the army of Christ without appearing for indoetrina- tion, training and the many bat- tles? Lodges and unions all have their rigid obligation, Even fire- men are expected at every Tues- day evening practice! Is it possi- ble that our Lord is more careless than we? We all know better, Yet, forsaking the principles of God's word, ate we fast becoming, as so-called church members, spiritu- ally “spoiled brats?” All of us must be disciplined to “suffer hardship as good soldiers of Jesus Christ.” In 2 Thessalon- jans we have this counsel: “Don't associate with the brother whose life is undisciplined, and who dis- Pises the teaching we gave you.” Later, in the same chapter it is ex- plained: “Tf anyone refuses to obey the command given above, mark that man, do not associate with him until he is ashamed of him- self, I don’t mean, of course, treat him as an enemy, but reprimand him as a brother,” Ht is finally up to the proper church officers to carry out church discipline in the name of their Work Starts Soon At Kennecott Mine Commonwealth Construction Co, Ltd, and Wright Engineers Ltd. are ready to enter the construction Phase of a 6,000-ton mill which will produce molybdenum sulphite concentrates for Kennecott’s mine at Alice Arm, 100 miles north of Prince Rupert behind the Alaska Panhandle. : R. Hi. Ansley, president and gen- eral manager of Commonwealth, said the joint venture, which won {the contract last July in competi- tion with several major firms In- cluding US companies, has been carrying on the engineering phase, Seneral excavation of the mill area and some small construction. Tenders were called by Kenne- cott on the basis of a package bid, to design and build the plant un- der certain general specifications |] which were spelled out. For thal| last six months Wright has had a team of about 40 engineers em: ployed on the design task. Orders now have been placed for structural steel for delivery in June, July and August. Orders for equipment totalling close to $10,- 000,000 have been placed for deli- very in the fall and winter. ; — Journal Commerce The hardest worker has the Take-out Orders, phone VI 3-6629 CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH Charch Distpline most luck. If the church is to grow and mature, the orders of Matthew 18 must be obeyed. ; We If we obey Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, we need not fear the outcome. In the early Church, after Ananiag and wife Sapphira were so severely disciplined, we read this surpris- ing account: When this happened, a deep sense of awe swept over the whole church and indeed over all these who heard about it...
