~ WE FOUGHT IT TOGETHER, LET'S STICK TOGETHER! Ch if 1 1 1 At Tribune press time, as Defend-Chile rallies took shape throughout the world, and only days after 800,000 Chileans demonstrated in support of their legal government, conflicting _ feports via Argentina said that the Popular Unity government of Salvador Allende had been smashed by military force. Unconfirmed reports from Buenos Aires quote the communique of a rebel military junta claiming that the presidential palace in Santiago had been stormed by troops and bombed by jets. Some reports said that President Allende had resigned to prevent the bloodshed of civil war. The President recently warned his supporters among Chile's Workers. and democrats to be prepared for any kind of right-wing Gnd fascist attack. Initial reports, inspired by the military, Gvoid any mention of public action. _ The Communist Party of Canada, as recently as Sept. 10, ‘a message of support to Luis Corvalan, general secretary of the Communist Party of Chile, pledged to rally Canadian opinion ‘support of the constitutionally-elected Allende government. If reports prove true, and the people’s will has been smothered Gnd their government crushed by militarists, few will doubt that the mortal enemies of the Chilean people, the international monopolies, are the instigators. The hard-fought strike of Canada’s railway workers sharpened the focus for the whole Canadian working class, on the difficulties to be beaten.in the struggle for a rising standard of life. The railway workers have performed a tremendous service in showing how a fight can be carried out in changing situations, against monopoly companies and their lap-dog government. As Dave Stark, a running trades member, put it at the Port Coquitlam ERBI 2 GW, CK Rawars meeting: which wound up the hold-out phase of battle against the railways: We should “return to work en masse to demonstrate to the company our unity. It was a good fight, but more important, we fought it together. We must continue to fight together.” That statement from a rank and file member, and the standing ovation he received for it, may well set the tone for railway union action from here on in. The west coast workers booed down the first back-to-work proposals; but with amendments providing for dropping all charges against rail workers, and agreement on a work-to-rule- campaign, the decision to return passed by a Narrow margin. The report by meeting chair- “man Roger Butler, that “we’ve heard nothing” on the requests for Canadian Labor Congress and B.C. Federation of Labor For more on the rail strike see Labor Scene Page 8 backing for the hold-out strike, made the final decision inevit- able. Freezing of prices at the highest level will not help the frantic consumer. It will only help the profit- eers, The greedy profiteers have no morals Or conscience. They raise prices on bread, milk, meat, clothing, housing, the main necessities of life. It is high time that these public enemies were rosecuted and an excess profit tax introduced to reduce this robbery of the public. For real action to prevent price rises and to roll back prices, the Communist Party proposes: e Invest the Food Prices Review Board with regulatory powers to ROLL BACK PRICES, PROSECUTE THE -PROFITEERS and EXTEND ITS JURISDICTION TO COVER ALL CONSUMER GOODS. e Nationalize the food processing corporations, meat packers and milling companies. Guaranteed and stable prices for farmers. e Reduce NHA Mortgages to 5 per- cent under Government guarantee. e A $200 per month pension for all senior citizens.-Cost of living escalator provisions on a quarterly basis for pensions, family, allowances, mothers @ Continued on page 10, SE Lowpt.
