Despite the hard times, Tribune supporters brought in a total of $85,839.55 when the donations were all added up. “This is not only a victory to celebrate — it is also a message to government and employers that, hard as it is for working during a time of restraint and unemploy- ment, they will support the paper that is fighting back,” Griffin told the crowd. The Tribune replenishes its cof- fers through the collective effort of thousands of readers and sup- porters. As always, there are those whose efforts put them in the tip league of Tribune fundraisers. Chief among these was sup- porters Alex McKitch, who topped last year’s effort of $3,000 with a donation of $3,200. Also receiving top honors were Mary and Walter Gawrycki, who between them rais- ed more than $5,000. Walter has become legendary for his door-to- door efforts and frequent treks along Vancouver’s waterfront dur- ing the 2/4-month drive. Other top members of the ‘500 club’? were Mona Morgan, who raised $1,418, and Gerry Delaney, whose efforts netted $1,224.
