January 6th, 1975 15, On invitation from Nic Worship the Mayor, Premier David Barrett Special Guest Speaker- then spoke to the assembly, expressing appreciation for the gifts he and Premier D, Mrs. Barrett had received, and commenting that he thought the well-attended paneer meeting reflected the growth of the City and renewed interest in civic affairs. Premier Barrett stated that while he and his family lived on Western Drive in the Mary Hill area of the City, his children benefited from the School system and from the City Council insisting on space for recreation on Mary Hill. Premier Barrett, in speaking on the need for Community recreation, mentioned that there will be more troubled children as family life continues to decline in North America, and he attributed this partly to the fact that very few families have older relatives living with them any more. Premier Barrett then spoke to the recent provision of bus transportation in the area, and commented that the success of this venture was due to the fset that Port Coquitlam has the highest rate of usage per capita not only in this Province, but in North America. Premier Barrett referred to highway improvements in the area, and expressed his uppreciation to the Mayors of the three municipalities involved for their co-operation in assisting to resolve problems in that regard. Premier Barrett then stated that the he had directed the Minister of Municipal Affairs to have a study on amalgamation undertaken this year, for which the Provincial Government would bear the entire cost, and that the study would be made available to the Municipal officials involved for discussion when it has been completed. Premier Barrett commented that Port Coquitlam is a growth area, and that there will be meetings with Municipal officials on housing plans and required services. Premier Barrett then extended congratulations to the re-elected Aldermen and stated that the endeavours of the Council to serve the Community had his sympathy, support and interest. At the request of His Worship the Mayor, Alderman Keryluk then Presentation ยง of gifts- presented Mrs. R. Wenman with a gold bracelet and charm depicting the Hon.& Mrs.R. Wenman (MP- crest of the City as a momento of Port Coquitlam, and Alderman Laking Fraser Valle West) presented Mr. R.
