Janna Taylor, Parks & Recreation Director FROM: Larry J. Wheeler, Recreation Manager/Deputy Director SUBJECT: Request for Free Use of Port Coquitlam Recreation Centre Recommendation It is recommended that United Way's request for free use of the Port Coquitlam Arena I/2 be denied. Puqxjee/Problem The purpose of this report is to provide information and a recommendation regarding a request received from United Way of the Lower Mainland for free use of Port Ccquitlam Arena f/2. Background Information In the attached letter (dated August 7, 1 992) received October 6, 1992, the United Way of the Lower Mainland is confirming the second annual face-off between the Canuck Oldtimers and the United Way's Celebrity team for November 15, 1992 at Port Coquitlam's Arena f/2. They are asking for "free use" of the Port Coquitlam Recreation Centre in an effort to offer an affordable afternoon of entertainment and to maximize proceeds. During this time, we normally offer two sessions of public skating. As a result of this event, both sessions will be cancelled. Our gross loss of revenues is estimated at $ 600.00 for these two sessions. Revenues for this Oldtimer's game will be $ 97.00 per hour. However, an issue that needs to be considered is the fact that we receive many requests each year for "free use" of facilities for fundraising events. A recent example would be the Kinsmen request for their Remembrance Day Skate-A-Thon. In recent years, these events have normally been denied.
