Demetzer swims to top. THOMAS DEMETZER just had the swim meet of his dreams. Terrace’s 12-year-old star swimmer racked up three sil- ver and two bronze medals at the B.C. Open Age Group Champions in Richmond July 10-12. He also got to meet the world’s third best backstroke swimmer. Demetzer shaved seconds off his 100-metre backstroke time ta touch the wall at 1:12:89 almost two seconds ear- lier than his entry time. He also took time off the 50-meire freestyle, 100-metre backstroke, and 200-metre medley events. He placed sec- ond in the 200 metre backstroke even though he finished a full second after his qualifying time. A boy of many talents, Demetzer won his bronze medal was in the 100-metre fly event. In fact, all of Demetzer’s finishes are in the top ten of the standings with Thomas getting best times in half of the events he competed in. Demetzer racked in points for his team, Points North Swimming. The team, a mix of northwest teams in our area, came in sixth overall at the meet with 747 points. Other Blueback swimmers to watch for are Jenine Barton who usually. medals in provincial meets but the swimmer graduated to the 14 and under age group this spring. Barton still had a good mect though, shaving time off her 50-metre freestyle swim and coming in cighth in the 200- metre fly. Tristan Brown came in filth in the 16 and under 100- metre fly competion. Julic Vanderlce also placed fifth in the 400-metre medicy and eighth in the 200-metre fly to complete her last competitive swim meet. Volleyball Anyone? TERRACE’S OWN analional volleyball player Jason Haldane shone in the Team Canada’s USA Tour last week. Haldane blocked six setups and aced four serves at the Colorado Springs Air Force Academy. Canada started slow against the USA National Volleyball Team, but managed to compete when Murray Grapentine came off the bench in the third set. Team Canada lost the match 3 games to 0, A League of our own. HOCKEY ENTHUSIASTS get ready, the Canadian Professional Hockey League could be coming to Terr. Les Williams, the promoter of a new pro minor hockey league, believes Terrace could join Kitimat and Prince Rupert to form a three-team competitive division of hock- ey players. Teams would begin playing in 1999 with ticket prices aiming at about $10 a seat for regular season games. Houston offers great golf CALL IT a round of friendly golf.
