— ee ——— ae ete - we ke ‘Khutzeymateen to be studied before . logging permitted The B.C. Ministry of Forests and the B.C. Ministry of En- vironment are undertaking a joint study to gather data for the: preparation of an integrated resource use plan for the Khutzeymateen River valley north of Prince Rupert. A forest license for the valley is held by Wedeene River Tim- ber, the company owned by Ter-. race’s Williams family that re- cently opened a new sawmill in Prince Rupert. Cutting permits, however, have not been issued for the area since controversy ’: erupted two years ago over the impact logging would have.on _ the resident. population of . grizzly bears. After a public hearing in Ter- race in 1986 the Wilderness Ad- visory Committee recommended an integrated resource policy that would allow limited logging in the valley, and their recom- mendation was adopted by the governnment, The decision was at odds with environmentalists, who were urging that the valley be designated an ecological reserve. Last month, however, a- private forestry consulting com- pany released its own report on the Khutzeymateen. Silva Eco- system Consultants Ltd. con- cludes that logging the valley would cost more than the timber . § is worth unless it’s sold on the export market. Their report states that poor timber quality. _ and difficult terrain would result _ in losses between $6 and $15 million for Wedeene River: Timber, projected at the present prices for domestic lumber. ~— _ The Ministry of Forests has estimated profits in the range of $25 million if the logs are sold "on the export market, but. the Silva report disputes: the min- istry’s estimates of timber vol-- ume, saying the company could _ still lose $5 million even at €Xx- port prices. Environment: Minister Bruce oo Strachan said at the time the - government study was announc- ed that it will begin this year and cost-benefit analyses will be ex- amined for all options. Forest Minister Dave Parker said, “If the options indicate the impact - on grizzly bear habitat:is unac-... ceptable, then logging will be reconsidered.” The government is encourag- ing public input into the plan- ning process.
