kof ti ox ouasifrona> ~D Wiiliam J. Smith | would like to see basic courses enhanc- ed and less emphasis placed on extra cur- ricular activities in order that our childen will be better prepared for post secondary education and better able to compete with students from other countries attending our universities. A number of Canadian students are having difficulty getting accepted in dif- ferent diciplines, such as medicine where we have tended to be at an academic disadvan- tage. Our students are not programed to study the way some pupils in other countries are. Too often Canadians are not equipped with the experience of inten- sive study which is re- quired at the university lavel. Ken Beddie | would prefer to see less emphasis placed on Grade 12 gradua- tlon. Why should some- one be considered a “dropout” If they don't have Grade 12. That person could be the world’s greatest electri- cian, artist or have achieved excellence in many different fields; yet not have Grade 12. Bouquet Garni Bouquet garni is a collection of herbs, tied with a bit of string, then placed i ina simmering sauce or stew, If dried herbs are used, wrap them in wel cheesecloth, The bouquet garni is removed at the endofthe cooking time. The Terrace Review asked: Other than the required courses ~ which exist in the education system, what would you like to see students learn? Gerry Lichtenfeld | would like to see a university established in Terrace. | have no problem with courses Offered at Northwest Community College but the subjects of study are limited in scope; there are a lot of in- terest courses with good information but | find Terrace has a healthy population of fairly young people in- volved in business and government orientated services. These in- dividuals often want to upgrade themselves through courses which are only offered at the university level. Only certain correspon- dence courses are available. | would like to get an engineering degree but | can’t living in the north. | would have to give up a job, house and live where | don’t want to be to do that. | would like to see more post secondary academic expansion in professional fields at the local institution. Ken Proctor When my daughter was in school she learned to spell phonetically, then Ina certain grade she was expected to spell cor- rectly. | think teachers should go back to the proper English system of spelling properly at the start. Begin as you mean to go on. Maureen Worobey The required courses are fine but | would like to see more emphasis put back on spelling, punctuation, writing skilis; generally better English. Students tend to get a rounded educa- tion but the instructors seem to be letting the basics slip. lt would ap- pear that concepts such as proper spelling and punctuation are be- ing ignored. Unfor- tunately, students hit the business world and are told “this won't do.” The system of education seems to be going on with young people having trouble spelling, writing and adding. John Clift | don’t want officials in the education field to add courses to the cur- riculum. l feel educators should con- centrate to a greater degree on the three R’s (reading, writing and arithmetic). If students are considering future studies in a specialized field or discipline, they should be given a grounding in the basics at the elementary and high school level and concentrate on specific subjects at the post secondary level. J Jenkins Terrace Review — Wednesday, November 12, 1986 5 Thornhill gets new Open letter residents of Thorakill, The Thornhill Volunteer Fire Depart- ment has recently replaced its first response van with a new truck, It is a 1986 Ford Econoline with a stretched body and frame and it replaces the older 1978 van which by now had: become very familiar and noticeable in its lime green shell. The old van had served us very well but in our ef- forts to. maintain modern and trouble-free vehicles, it was time to replace it. The van was purchased locally and ordered to our specifications. Even so, in order to keep costs down we ordered it with a bare interior and decided to do the interior work ourselves. It is almost complete and it is time to pass along a few thank you’s to several of the local mer- chants, distributors, and individuals who so kindly gave of their time and in many cases materials at reduced prices or free of charge: Totem Ford, Pacific Northern Gas, Rawcoast Signworks, Riverside Disposal, Nor- thern Magneto, Auto Marine Electric, Western Pacific Maintenance, Ter- race Interiors, The Ter- race Co-op Building Supp- ly Centre, S.K.B. Auto Wreckers, as well as Jim for GEORGE STANLEY SCHOOL BOARD firefighting va : Lotter Stainton and John Ireland all gave freely of their time and services. We take this opportuni- ty to thank you all very much. It is citizens like yourselves that have in part let us become what we are today, a modern and progressive fire department. This is also a good time to mention that with winter on our doorstep it would be a good idea to check that your chimneys are clean. While you are checking this and fire a prevention is fresh in your minds, are your batteries in your smoke detectors in good condition and are your fire extinguishers charged? (You do have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers I hope.) We are also able to ac- cept applications for membership to the Thorn- hill Fire Department at this time. For further in- formation call 638-1466 or 635-5078. You can also make application in per- sou at the Thornhill Fire Hall any Thursday even- ing between 7 p.m, and 9 p.m, - Bill de la Ronde, Deputy Chief Thornhill Fire Department NOVEMBER CAR & TRUCK SALE 10% Discount on all units purchased for Cash.
