f f | TRIBUNE SPECIAL PEACE SUPPLEMENT ‘L.. cRUISEIS A TREATY-BUSTER One thing Cruise isn’t is what Reagan says it is — a bargaining Chip to force the USSR to negotiate. The Soviet Union has already put forward proposals for a nuclear freeze, for no first use of nuclear weapons, for nuclear weapons-free zones (including Europe) and for dismantling both the Warsaw Pact and NATO. The U.S. rejects allthese. = = Cruise breaks previous SALT agreements which ban deploy- Ment of both groundand air-launched Cruise missiles with a range of over 350 miles. Cruise can be fired from land, sea or air. Its Small size. (6 metres) makes existing treaty verification methods orkable. = | Cruise is just wonderful for arms-makers because it makes mpts to limit arms production more difficult. For life on earth ‘ot So wonderful. Cruise marks a new stage in the arms race. stabilizing and highly dangerous. 2 = CRUISE IS A MASS KILLER The crude arithmetic of Cruise is this: more accuracy and more deaths. for your dollar. The guidance technology may be advanced and expensive; but the’ actual delivery system is the Cheapest yet devised — about $2-million each, or 2,000 for the Price of one U.S. Trident submarine. »It’s.a’single engine jet with a nuclear warhead 20 times the size of the Hiroshima bomb. Cruise was made cheaply to be deployed in large’numbers. Apart from the 464 scheduled for Europe this year, the U.S. intends to deploy 5,000 in all wings of its services. Together with Pershing-2 and MX, the capability will be in place to unleash droves of these toward the USSR from all directions. Such overkill means nothing in terms of deterrence — but means a lot in terms of starting and trying to win a nuclear war. 3. CRUISE IS FIRST-STRIKE WEAPON Other missiles are immediately detectable for what they are. ey go up and come down in an arc, and use rocket not.aircraft fuel — so they are detectable on launch from infra-red satellite Photography. Look at Cruise from.a radar screen, if you can, or look at it from a satellite — either way it’s no-different from a low. flying aircraft. Cruise is slow, 550 miles per hour, though a Supersonic Cruise is being developed, but Cruise is also very /ANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CRUISE | IO 4. cruise NUCLEAR BUTZKREIG Cruise is-an extension of Nazi Germany's V-Bomb. But the U.S. . hasn’t only borrowed from Hitler's technology — it has also borrowed from his strategy — Blitzkreig, or lighting war. Cruise _< has only one. other comparable weapons’ system, it's the _ Pershing-2. Both are surprise attack weapons. What Pershing _ lacks in stealth it makes up in speed. Pershing and Cruise are accurate enough to take out Soviet missile sites. The USSR might see Pershing coming — but they'll ‘have less than six minutes to do anything about it. Backed by hundreds of Cruise rockets, this isn’t deterrence, it’s first strike nuclear blitzkreig. That’s the reason for the “launch on warning” statement by the USSR. It isn’t an attempt to “frighten the peace movement”, but a cold recognition of the reality of today’s nuclear nightmare. 5 = CRUISE HURTS CANADA Canadais not asnuclear power — not yet.
