Hastings Vancouver Talking things over mine who is a public health problems is to try and get young- sters to have their teeth attended to by a dentist. Now, I know it is not the most enjoyable thing to have to make a date with ‘a drill, but at the same time it is one of the most necessary to safeguard general good health. My friend found, however, that many of the children lacked dental care be- cause their parents could-not af- ford to have such work done, and so teeth which with prompt at- tention might have been saved, eventually had to be pulled. It is possible in the city at least, to have free dental work done for elementary pupils, this work being paid for by the school board, but after a child reaches grade seven this service is dis- continued. And many parents do not want to send their children to the clinic because they feel they would. be accepting charity. I think that the Parent-Teacher Association on Salt Spring Island has the right idea in coping with this problem. The association se- cured the services of a dentist discharged from. the army, and using the school’s health room, was able to give.treatment to 189 children in three. months. A reg- istration fee of two dollars a child was charged and a like amount was promised by the government. In some instances the cnild‘s teeth were perfect ‘and in other cases considerable work had to be done. The dentist, who brought his own equipment, was paid three dollars an hour for six hours a day, and after 4 p.m. he worked on the adult population at his own responsibility. The whole venture cost $1030.07, which was raised by fees, government grant, donations, dances, etc. A balance of $225.32 was left over and this has ben set aside for a future clinic. tke Fe LITTLE KATY has been so disappointed about being unable to continue her jaunts to the com- munity swimming pcol because of the polio outbreak, but after reading about some of the refuse and garbage dragged out of some of the wading pools, I feel thank- ful that ours has been drained. It is really disgraceful that the park board is creating a health menace out of a supposed contri- bution to the health and welfare of children. The wading pools naturally collect every conceivable ching a child might play with and should be cleaned at least every other day. Next time I attend my com- munity council meeting it: will ‘be the first thing to be discussed or I miss my guess. , K SK ok SPEAKING OF polio, however, here are a few pertinent facts concerning this crippling disease. Polio is a virus disease which may enter the body through the through the larynx, the windpipe and bronchial tubes, or through the digestive tract. ; Symptoms may involve head- ache, moderate fever, upset stom- ach, loose stools, and obstinate constipation in a normally regu- lar person.. The virus may be carried by flies, found in infected sewage and so contaminate drink- ing water (especially at summer camps). HAST. 0340 766 E.
