Dividend payments by Can-

highest mark they have ever
been for the month of March. A

for 1952 as compared to $48,-

report came on the heels of
Prime Minister St. /Laurent’s
March 16 speech calling for
“sacrifice and deprivations” for
the arms race. :
Cumulative total for the first
quarter is up to $146,182,278 an
increase from $133,604,941 and
$118,539,391 respectively for,
similar periods of 1951 and 1950.
Five companies alone, Alum-
inium, Distillers Corporation,
Ford, International Petroleum
and International Paper are
Paying out almost $20 million
in March dividends.

cateor and churchman, Rev. Wil-
lard Ulphaus, will address a peace
rally ito ibe held at Pender Audi-
torium ‘here on “April 18.

Sponsored by British Columbia
Peace Council, the rally will be
a prelude to the Third Brit-
ish Columbia Peace Conference
which convenes April 19-20 in
Pender Auditorium.

Dr. Uphaus, who is now nation-
al co-director of the American
Peace Crusade, has had a dis-
tinguished ‘career as a ‘school
teacher, principal, school super-
intendent, university professor
and public lecturer. He has been
a leader in the YMCA, Student
Christian ‘Movement, and the Na-
tional Religion and Labor Foun-
dation. He has ‘been atctive not
only in the field of religion, ‘but
also ‘in the labor movement of
his country.

After graduating from Yale
University, with his M.A. and
Ph.D. degrees in religious edu-
cation, he spent a year as pro-
fessor of religious education at
Hampton Institute, ‘then three
years in a similar post with the
YMCA ‘Graduate School and Van-
denbilt University.

For two years he was Sterling
Research Fellow in . ‘Character
Education and lecturer on Re-
ligion in Higher Education at
Yale, subsequently travelling to
50 universities from Maine to
Colorado on a speaking and con-
ference tour for the Student
‘Christian Movement and the Na-
tional Religion and Labor Foun-
dation. ‘

From 1934-50 he was executive
secretary of the National Re-

jigion and Labor Foundation, his,

setting up ‘local Religion and

and religious scene.

He is a member of Local 204,
American Federation of Teach-
ers, AFL, and for many years
has been a delegate to the New
Waven Central Labor Council.

NATO which will cost Canadians
$324 million, more than double
last year’s cost. Abbott also said
‘there were additional expendit-
ures from ‘the RCMP, and the
“defense research ‘board’? which
under NATO agreement, could be
charged to “national defense”.

When Finance Minister Abbott
brings down the budget on April
8 observers here belive it will call
for heavier burdens on Canadian
taxpayers to pay for the increas-
ed arms bill — despite the unpre-
cedented $721 million surplus the
government ‘amassed last year. In
any event, it is clear, there will be
no relief for working people now
footing the bill.

Arms spending

The St. Laurent government increased its arms budget iby 23 per-
cent on March 19 when Finance Minister Douglas Abbott tabled esti-
mates of expenditures ‘by the government for the coming 1952-53

30 percent of all government expenditures and will cost-each of Can-
