‘Sisters in The brutal dictatorship in Sai- gon needs no lessons on the treatment of its political prison- ers from anyone. But the -simi- larities between the two cases— that of Angela Davis, whose trial opened this week, and Mme. Ngo Ba Thanh who is before a military court — are striking. Mme. Thanh was carried professor of science at Saigon University, charged with “sab- otaging national security, found- ing an illegal political organiza- tion and keeping communist documents in her home.” An- gela Davis is a former professor of philosophy at the University of California at Los Angeles, charged with conspiracy to com- _ mit murder. Mme. Thanh was _ carried into court last week by armed guards from her cell in Saigon’s women’s prison seriously ill with pneumonia, high blood pressure and heart disease. The court has been told she will die unless she receives medical care. The trial was adjourned but bail was refused. Angela’ Davis’ health deteriorated dan- gerously during her 16 months in prison. Medical attention was scant and bail refused repeated- ly until last month. The military court in Saigon was heavily guarded for the trial, troops surrounded the building checking documents and preventing her supporters from entering the court. The courtroom and building in San Jose, California is an armed camp. More than $300,000 has been spent on “security arrange- ments”, supporters are prevent- ed from demonstrating within one mile of the building. chains... ¥ October while entering the Lower House Assembly build- ing to discuss with Opposition deputies ways of helping North Vietnamese victims of a flood and typhoon disaster. Angela Davis’ “crime” is actively work- ing on behalf of her people, involving herself with the de- fense of the Soledad Brothers, being a member of the Com- munist Party of the USA and fighting against the war Southeast Asia.» Imperialism’s hatred of heroic fighters knows no bounds either in South Vietnam or the USA. Frame-ups, assassinations, legal lynching and, physical maltreat- ment in prison are all part of the weapons used to suppress the people’s leaders. Stamp out fascist thugs and arsonists We demand an immediate, full and public investigation of the attempt last Friday night to burn down the offices of the Canadian Tribune. We demand the fascist criminals be nam- ed, prosecuted and punished. Why have the police issued no re- port?..* Why are press, TV, radio, all the in- formation media, silent? Has word gone out from Ottawa and Queen’s Park to put the lid on the news of this Nazi-like arson? That’s how the fire investigator from the Office of the Fire Marshal described this vicious attack on our paper—“break-in and arson.” There can be no doubt where these torch thugs come from, or whose dark purposes they serve. We charge them to be from among that riffraff of anti-Sovieteers and anti-communists composed of groups like the Western Guard and the Hun- garian Freedom Fighters. The openly pro-Nazi Western Guard, formerly the Edmund Burke Society that provided candidates for the Social Credit party in last fall’s Ontario elections, is now publicly arming its members with .22 ealibre rifles without hindrance from police or governments. The Hungarian Freedom Fighters, notorious . fascist hoods, include Geza Matrai (also a Western Guard..member and an On- tario Social Credit candidate) who vio- lently attacked Soviet Premier Kosy- gin in Ottawa last October. Within the last few weeks the editor of New Word, the progressive Hun- garian language paper with offices ad- jacent to ours, has many times been threatened to “change your mind and direction before it’s too late.” A month ago the street wall of our building was besmirched with the murderous words, “Kill the reds”. The fascist groups have powerful friends. The Progressive Conservative party has just named Dmytro Kupiak as its federal election candidate in Toronto- Lakeshore riding. Kupiak was a Band- erist, one of the Ukrainian fascists armed by the Nazis when the Soviet Army drove them off the sacred soil of the USSR. Kupiak fled to Canada _in 1946 to escape the retribution of the Soviet people who still seek him as a war criminal. The Communist Party of Canada has warned of the dangerous attempts of reaction in our country. to knock together a grouping of Social Credit, Action Canada and right-wing forces in the Liberal and Conservative par- ‘ties. In the immediate context of the upeoming federal elections, such a re- actionary grouping has the aim of driving Canadian politics to the right, of chaining Canada more rigidly to the cold war policies of U.S. imperialism, of undermining still further Canadian independence. These are the forces whose purposes were and are being served by anti- Sovietism and anti-communism, by the SOT se ey fascist arsonists’ attack on the dian Tribune.
