That Gounedd adepkh the attached resolution concerning regulations
voverniiag qualiiy atandirds for prepackaged water, and that this resolution be
forwarded «to the FCM as vequented by the Canadian Water and Wastewater
Aunoctlation.

DACKGROUND AND COMMENTS :

The Environmental Protection Committee was in receipt of
correspondence from the Canadian Water and Wastewater Assoclation expressing
concern that there La ai parception held Ly the public that prepackaged or
bottled water ie of a higher quality than tap water when, in fact, the
regudations governing thin produtt are not as stringent as those governing
nuntedipal water supplies.

The CWWA urges Couneltl to adopt thea attached resolution which
requeata that prepackaged water be included in the forthcoming Drinking Water
Safeny Act whieh will ftneorporate the Guidelines For Canadian Drinking Water
Qualiey which have been adopted by all the Provinces. Currently this product
{4 vegulated under the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations which covers only a
few of thea elements contained im the Guidelines. The Committee agreed that
all drinking water should be subject to the same stringent regulations as tap
water and aupports the vaquest.
