HINTS Here is a suggestion for potters who are fast running out of the old-style ceramic wax and who do not wish to have parafin smoking away in the corner of the studio: Try a jar of petroleum jelly (ex.Vaseline). Just stir in turpentine until the mixture is the consistency of softly whipped cream. You will find this is ideal to apply to foot rims, ete. If you wish to do A WAX resist design with a sumi brush, thin the mixture (up to 50%) with more turpentine and practice until the con- sistency 1s right fur your needs. (An old ecorrugated cardboard box is good to practice on - it gives resis- tence and absorbency, something like bisque). The more turps added, the faster the resist will dry. The advantages are: (1) Doesn't drip off your brush (unless really thinned); (2) Dries quickly and the glaze does not bead up on it: (3) Inexpensive and accessible; (4) Leaves no fired residue on the pot.
