Sandra Stefanik, an ad designer and creator at The Terrace Standard, placed third for her work on a black and white ad as part of the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Associalion’s annual awards. The ad, entitled “Hold On to Your Hats,” was for Totem Furniture. And The Terrace Stan- dard placed third across the province among news- papers in its circulation category. “The combination of in- dividual awards as well as one for the newspaper it- self is welcome because it reflects the kind of work that’s needed to produce our paper each week,” said publisher Rod Link. This is the 15th year of publication for The Ter- race Standard. From front Climate a factor in outbreak and infected needles get ‘summers and mild winters of recent years — thought to be a result of global warming — have triggered the spread of the fungus. “It’s definitely climate change related, I think,” he said. “The epidemic that we have now is a combination of suitable climate to start with becoming even more wet and cool in the sum- mer and possibly the fact we haven't had any killing winter conditions.” There’s also a risk that the fungus, which is on the western fringe of the Bulk- ley Forest District, could spread east into the al- ready beetle-infested cen- tral interior, where lodge- pole pine is the naturally dominant species. Blighted forests in the northwest, where hemlock and cedar prevails, will eventually regenerate. But much of the current generation of second growth pine nearin matur- ity could be endangered.
