B16- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 10, 1998 FILMMAKERS VISIT Stewart seen as free skiing mecca WITH LOGGING and min- ing all but gone in Stewart, the tiny municipality north of here has turned to ancther natural resource — snow. The visit by a crew this spring to film experts free skiing down some of the area’s) more spectacular mountains could be the start of a thriving tourist busi- ness, hopes Cathy Bater from the Stewart-Hyder Chamber of Commerce. Free skiing is the term used for those who use helicopters or snowmobiles to take themsclves high up in the mountains for a thunderous descent downward. Free skiers are trained in Mountaineering and snow conditions and use common sense to avoid dangerous areas and circumstances. Real Action Pictures (RAP) of Calgary will have its film out this fall and Stewart residents are getting ready to host skiers from around the world beginning next year. Bater said RAP chose Stewart after pouring over maps of the world and checking weather condi- tions. “They said Europe is far too crowded and Alaska is overpricing added. Businesses and people: in Stewart chipped in accom- modations and food for twa filmmakers and five skiers for 11 days of filming. “The community is very supportive of this,’ said Bater. ‘They really themselves and described ihe snow here as funky. They said Stewart has mecca-ski potential,’” Bater said of the visitors. Free skiers prefer the spring as thal’s when there is the most snow and better weather to go itito the high country. One of the visiting skiers, Aaron McGovern, rated the third best free skier in the world, was the first person to ski the 1900 vertical foot north face of the Cambria Peak, located just a few miles from Stewazt. Bater said RAP will market its film to various sports TV channels, “They’ll hit just the market they want,”’ she con- tinued. Stewart residents also hope its snow and geog- raphy will attract more and More adventure snow- mobilers. itself,’ she Score Board Men’s Soccer League Standings to May 31 Team GPW L T Pls Super BM ° ra 44 9 0 12 Forestry 1546-644 «0 0 12 Greenville 4i S$ 3241 0 6 Home Hardware 10 6 #4 2 2 0 6 Intemationals 11 #15 5 1 3 1 4 Park V&M 9 19 4 1 2 1 4 Kermode Stompers 144 30 5 0 4 1 1 Western Pacific 4 6 3 02 1-1 Game results May 27 Internationals 2— Greenville 1 Super BM 5 — Kermode Stompers 4 May 31 Home Hardware 1 - Western Pacific 0 (loss by default) internatlonals 3 - Kermode Stompers 3 Forestry 3 - Park V&M 0 Greenville - Super BM (game postponed due to road conditions) Phone: 604-689. 0878 James W.
