in Nass again

A BLOCKADE of a native-
owned logging company in the
Nass Valley ended two days alter
it started with an agreement to
pay for a number of destroyed
traps.

Stephens Sr. of Greenville set up:

said Nisga’e Economic Enter-
prises Ltd. refused to recognize
first the loss of his traps and then
income from his trapline.

The blockade went down April
14 after Stephens negotiated a
settlement with the company.

Nisga’a Economic Enterprises
and ITT Rayonier log in the Nass
Valley and export their cut.

It’s the second such blockade to
go up this year in protest of the
effects of logging in the valley.

Sim Gan Forest Products, owned
by the village of Gitvinksihlkw,
until a Supreme Court order was
issued,

Willard Martin, a nephew. of
Stephens, said equipment owned
by Nisga’a Economic Enterprises

and ITT Rayonier drove aver and:

destroyed traps owned by his un-
clue,

Martin said his uncle was alone
on the blockade but had visitors
dropping by to support him.

Nisga’a Economic Enterprises

said it did inform Stephens by let-

ter of its logging plans.

Martin said his uncle never did
receive the letter.

He said Stephens also received
support during a-feast held last
week on the occasion of Nisga'a
