TERRACE — The Pre- Employment Program for Women, sponsored by Canada Employment Cen- tre, has recently been dropped by it’s sponsor, said Lillian Nicholas, the - mew executive director for . the Kermode Friendship Centre in Terrace. by Daniele Berquist Nicholas said she is ready to face the chal- lenge. ‘“‘We have to work on a different angle for the native people,” - She explained that a_ large number of the pro- grams for the centre .are aimed at re-entry of wo- men into the work force.: If one looks at the: native community and their family, a person can see that the spouses feel threatened by their wives’ new work place. This causes family conflicts, Nicholas said. Her goal is to have the men become more involved. ‘Hopeful- ly in some kind of pre- employment program.’ This would help close, if not eliminate, the.gap bet- . ween spouses,’? she add- ed. i ‘The centre is also in the process of purchasing units through the Urban Native Housing Program and Canada Mortgage and - Housing Corporation. Nicholas said that a pro- . gram management .at the centre will be set for the purpose in the near future. Nicholas’ also stated that she plans on building up on the already well established vclunteer system at the Kermode Friendship Centre. ‘‘I would like to offer some opportunities for the Mary Johnny, a Grade 10 student at Skeena Junior Secon- dary School, finds the Terrace Public Library an asset when it comes to getting homework done. “It's quieter here than at schoo! and the library has all the books | need," volunteers by training them. This would pro- bably take place in the form of workshops, or at- tending a specific course at the college.”’ Nicholas . feels this would help eliminate the boredom that is. often associated | with being a volunteer. Over.the next-few mon- ths, Nicholas will be trying to re-establish. a Liaison - person for the native peo- ple with Social Services. The post, very much need- ed, has now been empty for about a month she - said. Nicholas stated that she was very pleased with the staff as a whole at the Ker- mode Friendship Centre. I’m very excited .about working with them and we plan a great year, she said. Nicholas is from Wind- q ermere, B.C., ‘north of | Cranbrook. She was pre- viously employed as. an Employment and Educa- tion counsellor with the Kootenay Indian ‘Area -Councel in Cranbrook, from which she resigned last December. Nicholas is replacing Viola Thomas, past executive director for the centre. Thomas is now working with Pheytus publishing located in Pen- ticton. Before Nicholas accepted her post as ex- ecutive director, Johanne. | Peters acted as interim. director from May of. '86,, until December *86. Nicholas attended a col- | ‘lege in Chicago for three years where’ she majored: in education. ‘‘I had plan- ned on being a ‘teacher, therefore I have number of administration courses behind me along with cur- riculum development courses, recreation, lead- ership, music and a variety of subjects.”’ Nicholas has dealt with training programs, done a _ large amount of individual © counselling for native peo- ple, helping them to either get into training, employ- ment or to go back to. school. Nicholas comes from a family of 12 children. She has nine brothers and two § sisters. She went through the residential school . system until its closure in 1970. Nicholas then at- tended public -school in Windermere. She has travelled exten- sively through the United States and has spent two months in South America. Nicholas stated she loves | to travel and expects tobe §& doing a lot more of it. Her ultimate ambition § before accepting the post as executive director was to return to university and . J pursue her Masters or Doctorate in child _psy- chology or clinical psy- chology. Nicholas said she sees the need among the native people to be helped and understood because of their background. Nicholas stated that she § is prepared for the chal- lenge that is offered as ex-— ecutive director for the Kermode Friendship Cen- tre.
