PEREGRINE FALCON — In many areas of North
America, the peregrine falcon has become extinct
as a breeding species, It is occasionally still seen
on migration, usually around inland -or coastal
marshes which attract the myriad of shorebirds and
other intermediate-sized birds which form its staple
diet. It captures its prey in the air by diving
from above, often reaching speeds in excess of

Trapped gas pains

DEAR DR. LAMB — For
relief from the discomfort and
annoyance that is caused by
trapped gas I have been using
a simethicone product that
has the brand name Phazyme.

I have been taking six to
eight a day and feel that I
need still more relief. Would
it be risky to take much
more?

Is there anything else that
might be better for my

The simethicone is supposed
to make smaller bubbles but
that often makes little
difference — gas is gas
whether the bubbles are large
or small.

Phazyme also contains pan-
creatin, an enzyme which is
protected from digestion until
it reaches the small intestine.

food more completely to pre-
vent absorption failures that
lead to fermentation and gas
formation.

Your problem, however,
may not be related to un-
digested food but to swallow-
ing air. Often swallowed air is
a major part of the gas in the

effects of dairy products I am
now using a powdered non-
dairy creamer.

I have heard that these
products may cause cancer
because of the preservatives
that are used in their produc-
tion. .

I would appreciate your
comment regarding these
rumors and the danger of
preservatives as used in
producing foods.

have been listening to health
food quacks. The non-dairy
creamer you mention is made
mostly from coconut oil —
labeled vegetable oil. It is rich
in saturated fat. It contains
mere than whipping cream.
That is not good for in-
dividuals needs to restrict
their saturated fat intake to
prevent heart and vascular
disease.

Preservatives may make

food more healthy, not harm--

ful. Did you know that vitamin
C is a food preservative? That
is why dipping peeled fruit,
such as a banana in orange
juice or lemon juice will pre-
vent it from turning brown.

Other common preser-
vatives are BHT and BHA.
You will see them listed with
the ingredients of many food
products. It has been accused
of all sorts of dire effects by
the alarmists. Studies actual-
ly suggest they may prevent
cancer.

When mice prone to
stomach cancer were fed BHT
there was a marked drop in
the rate of slomach cancer.
This may be one reason there
has been such a dramatic
decline in the rate of stomach
cancer in the United States

and other countries where:

preservatives are commonly
used. I think you can safely
disregard the rumors and mis-
representations regarding the
preservatives used in your
food. They actually protect
your health.

TORONTO (CP)- Laura Sabia, former
chairman of the Ontario Status of Women
Council, said Tuesday that she and a
group of women may try to form an all-
woren political party in Canada.

During a women’s lecture sponsored by
Seneca College of Applied Arts and
Technology, Mrs. Sabia said that “the
problem with women being elected to the
House of Commons is that they became a
part of the male-dominated political
structure and inevitable myst toe the line
in caucus.”

She said she did not want to be critical

of women who had been elected to
Parliament, but "they’ve all joined the
boys and their petty political games.”

“We're catling a meeting of prominent
Canadian women soon to see if there is a
possibility of organizing along political
lines,’’ she said. “However, I think rather
than trying to gain power immediately,
we should form with a view to learning.”

Mrs. Sabia said that neither the federal
or Ontario governments have heeded
Canadian women’s demands for a change
in property laws, the Canada Pension
Plan or fer removing abortion from the
Criminal Code.

‘Prime Minister Trudeau and the rest

of the politicians continue to ignore 52
percent of the electorate- we women,” she
said, ‘And add to that changing attitudes
- well I say the women's movement has
not come very far.”

Mrs. Sabia said that women have ‘done
a lot of stupid things to ourselves.”

“We have divided ourselves completely
over such issues as pro-life.

“or for that matter why haven't
working women accepted the fact that
when a woman chooses to remain at home
as a housewife, she is still working. This
is the type of thinking that has kept the
women's movement from becoming a
unified force.”

proposed family law reform legislation in
Ontario would still use fault in the division
of property,” she said.
