10 “ THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER COMMITTEE CALLS FOR ALL LOCALS CO-OPERATION The Committee has studied the report of the Officers, and wish to make the following observations: ADMINISTRATION The Committee feels that complete co-operation of all Local Unions on policy is de- sirable and attainable. The Committee feels that the granting of subidies to the Locals involved is the first step to complete independ- ence of the Locals in line with what happened in the interior when the locals eventually became self-supporting. ORGANIZATION The Committee feels that the report of the Organization Committee will adequately ’ cover this section. ~ NEGOTIATIONS — The Officers should be com- mended for their efforts in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and while the rates negotiated in these areas are low by Coast standards they are an improvement on rates in those areas. Officers should also be com- mended for their all-out ef- forts and accomplishments in ‘presenting their brief and arguments on behalf of the membership in the Interior. FINANCES The Committee hopes that the Officers and Regional Ex- ecutive Board will immediate- ly after this convention make the necessary adjustments to put the Region on a sound financial footing. STRIKE FUND The Officers should be com- mended for their judgment in regards to investing Strike Fund monies, STRIKES It is gratifying to note that this union has been success- ful in prosecuting strikes to a successful conclusion in the face of strong employer op- position and that the co-oper- ation of all levels of this Re- gional Council were available at the time of need. TRADESMEN We commend the Officers for the successful conclusion of Tradesmen agreements and that many of our members are now enjoying wages com- mensurate with their skill. However, we strongly urge that an all-out effort be made to extend those benefits to all tradesmen in this Regional Council. We would like to point out to the delegates however, that any delay in the implementation of those plans are not the fault of this organization. POLITICAL The Committee agrees that a greater interest is being shown by the membership in Political Action, and it is re- grettable that more success was not forthcoming in the elections held in B.C. and Al- berta. However, the Commit- tee feels that with a concen- trated effort at all levels the complete desires of the mem- bership will-be realized. EDUCATION The program developed by the Officers to extend the benefits of an Educational program to the membership and their families in the In- terior prior to and during ne- gotiations was welcomed and appreciated by the people in that area. It is hoped that the Officers will continue to offer the facilities of the Educa- tional Dept. to all Local Un- ions so that Shop Stewards, Committee members and the membership will be better in- formed of the aims and ob- jectives of. this organization. AUXILIARY The Committee are of the opinion that instead of laud- ing the efforts of a dedicated few who are attempting to make Auxiliaries function in thee Hav WM Craftsmanship A series from the Masters dedicated in Canada's Centennial Year to the men privileged to wear footwear created by the skilled hands of Pars craftsmen, working in living leather for over half of Canada’s Centennial. Local Unions the Officers should be making a deter- mined effort in conjunction with Local Unions to make Auxiliaries an effective group within this organization. SAFETY The Committee notes that the Officers neglected to men- tion one of the most important areas of our Union, namely the safety Program and sug- gest that future reports of the Officers contain specific mention of our Safety Pro- gram. s/H.
