European and Asian countries were also represented, as were Mexico, the USA, and Canada. The Lisbon Declaration of the confer- ence condemns Israel for *“expropriating Arab lands and water resources .. . and establishing settlements ... arbitrarily detaining and torturing freedom fighters in Israeli prisons and imposing collective punishment and arrests: changing the political and demographic and cultural characteristics of the occupied Arab ter- ritories including Jerusalem.” | It points to Israel's ‘barbaric attacks on Lebanon,” and calls for ‘‘immediate and strict implementation of Security Council Resolutions 425, 426, 444 and 450...’ It expresses ‘‘full solidarity” Yasser Arafat, PLO chairman, and Costa Gomes, former president of Portugal. flanked by PLO and Portuguese conference organizers as they acknowledge ‘enemas receptions at opening session in Lisbon, Nov. 2, of the World Conference in Solidarity with the Arab People and Their Central Cause: Palestine. with Syria ‘‘in its frontline confrontation against Zionism and imperialism (and) the struggle of the Arab Front of Stead- fastness and Confrontation (Syria, Algeria, Lybia, Democratic Yemen and the PLO).”’ It expresses support of the national movements in the Arab penin- sula and the (Persian) Gulf. Investigate Human Rights In lengthier documents — Draft Prog- ram of Action, and a resolution on the Unity of the Struggle of the Arab Nation and the Peoples of the World — the con- ference continued a firm singleness of purpose. It condemned the massive U.S. military build-up throughout the Middle East, including the Persian Gulf and in the Indian Ocean. Describing U.S. Mideast plans as “part of the global plans of world imperialism,’’ the conference documents link the economic and military plans which stretch from the Middle East to southern Africa, to domination attempts in the African Horn, and to reactionary regimes in Latin America. They call_for campaigns against the anti-Palestinian Camp David accords, for the implementation of U.N. resolu- tion 3236, and for campaigns for governmental recognition of the PLO. Lisbon meeting backs Palestinians Voting in favor of the Program of Ac- tion, delegates pledged continuing ac- tions to: e Assist the PLO in preparation of a world information project to expose the Israeli settlements plan and its goal, the permanent expulsion of the Palestinians. e Condemn Israeli plans to liquidate the cultural heritage and the national Arab identity of the Paiestinian people. e Urge internatinal non-governmental bodies engaged in investigating viola- tions of human rights to intensify their activities in the occupied territories and ensure the broadest publicity for the re- sults of their work. To back up these, efforts the confer- ence considered suggestions for PLO de- legations to various countries, exhibi- tions and film showings depicting the Palestinian struggle, in part through co- operation with the U.N. Special Unit on Palestine (which was represented at the conference) and utilizing its publica- tions. The conference voted to have the international secretariat which organized it, continue its work to achieve world- wide solidarity with the Arab people and the cause of Palestine. inte ntsh, Canadian and American invoubence units were apparently BD atte ‘ved in at least two unsuccessful oe Rear to overthrow the Peoples’ olutionary Government of Gre- Week PRG spokesmen said last es eg two plotted coups, one to go ors Stale on October 15, and Were ther planned for November 3 forts uncovered by government | spirae With a number of the con- | of arrested and large caches | e Sehaieg and explosives seized, ion of with detailed documenta- Of the plotted ventures.
