It is generally agreed by people of all countries that a third world war would settle nothing; it would destroy everything. In the atomic age of the hydrogen-bomb, the people of all countries (including the people of British Columbia) must intervene to end the horrible threat of war and stop the ter- rible waste of resources and money on armaments which can only result in our own destruction and the loss of our loved ones. The prospect that peace can be made secure, that our boys can come back home, and that we may be able to resume trade with all countries, lifts the hearts of all patriotic Can- adians today. That is the direction which we, as your re- presentatives in the B.C. legislature, will speak for, and en- ergetically work for. In peace and friendly relations we can reopen trade with all countries. Let us not forget we share the northern rim of the Pacific Ocean with the greatest potential market in the world today! As a prominent B.C. executive, Harold Foley of the Powell River Company, recently said, “There just couldn’t be anything wrong with peace. It would bring nothing but benefits to the North American Continent.” I agree we have nothing to lose from peace. We have everything to gain. To reestablish B.C.s traditionally and vital British markets, the Labor-Progressive party proposes that we undertake to buy a dollar’s worth of goods in some part of the British Common- wealth or sterling area, in return for every dollar’s worth of products purchased from us by any country of the Common- FARMING... ‘ Ru F. entict Rossland o reumce wealth or sterling bloc. Such a trade policy would keep all our workers employed. It would bring to B.C. millions of dollars worth of tropical and sub-tropical products which we now have to pay for in U.S. dollars, in return for our grow- ing surplus of lumber, fish and farm products. The 25 candidates of the Labor-Progressive party have started a crusade—a great crusade which will continue until this pro- gram has become a reality; A crusade which will win in- creasing support of all patriotic citizens of our beautiful and fruitful province—all who want a secure and prosperous fu- ture; all who hate injustice and war; all who love their homes, their children and their country. Your vote on June 9 will be an important one in deter- mining our future. Two roads stand before us today. One leads to lower incomes for the workers and farmers, profes- sional and business people; to unemployment, less welfare, health and educational services; and to' war. The other is the road to peace, the reassertion of our national independence, and the development of B.C.’s resources for its people. The LPP calls upon the people of British Columbia to reject the road to depression and war—to take the new road to security, opportunity and a good life. I ask you to work and vote for the candidates of he Labor-Progressive party. The only candidates in this election who can be depended on to speak and actively work for peace and the people’s welfare. We appeal especially to the great powerful labor and farm movement of British Columbia to come forward, join with our party and help make sure that B.C.’s next legislature will put the people’s interests first!
