The ConEiiittee memters requested that copies be made for their review as well as a report on what was done in previous years'ampaigns. Council has banned residential backyard burning as of January 1, 1989, and has directed the material normally turned ( not be picked up with the regular domestic garbage. Land clearing tur'ning has /d~ been permitted to continue until April 14, 1989. ! s Q i s E 1ii I' I SITE FOR DISPOSAL OF SMALL QUANTITIES OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS the letter. !!j!jjll iis BRIEF TO PROVINCIAL TASK FORCE ON SOLID IsIASI'E The Deputy Engineer presented a letter from the Minister of Environment requesting assistance in identifying potential sites for disposal of small quantities of waste laboratory chemicals. The Committee decided to defer discussion to a future meeting after the members have had a chance to review ITEM V: I GVRD GVRD has requested that Council endorse their brief which was submitted to the Provincial Task Force on Solid Waste Management. The Chairman agreed to determine whether this has been done. ITEM IV: Jl I 1989 BUDGET next meeting. Ii ','ll 3 Ji I II: The Deputy Engineer noted that the 1989 Provisional Budget contains an allowance of $ 10,000 in operating funds and an addition of $ 10,000 to the Recycling Reserve Fund which would bring the total in the reserve to $ 20s000. Grass clippings and other yard waste was also identified as having potential for compo.'ting, although this material is not normally burned. The Committee requested that copies of City reports on the subject be made available to them for review, and that the Deputy Engineer contact the GVRD and other municipalities to determine what they are doing to solve the problem and what their experience has been. This item will be discussed at the next meeting. ITEN VII: NULTI-MATERIAL RECYCLING PILOT PROJECT The Deputy Engineer reviewed a proposal from SHARE to carry out a six month pilot project in one area of the City to determine costs, diversion rates, etc. The Committee requested that a representative of SHARE be invited to the next meeting to discuss the proposed pilot project. ITEM VII: PESTICIDE APPLICATION REGULATIONS Information obtained from the City of Vancouver was presented and discussed. The Committee decided to fer discussion to a future meeting after they have had a chance to review the information. The Chairman agreed to discuss the matter with members of the Simon Fraser Board of Health. ITEN VIII: OTHER BUSINESS Alderman Wright referred to a complaint he had received from Nr. John Nonte of 1628 Chadwick regarding gypsum board cuttings which the resident of James street had buried in his tack yard. The Deputy Engineer noted 2824 that the complaint had been referred to the Waste Management Branch who are st. investigating the complaint. Alderman Wright referred to a complaint he had received about a business in the Meridian Industrial Park which had been turning styrofoam chips among other things on their property. The Deputy Engineer agreed to contact the Fire Department as well as the Air Quality Control Section of the GVRD to determine whether turning is permitted and if so what restrictions apply and what enforcement can be undertaken.
