But it could aggravate minor vision problems that are normally not treated. f And it can definitely cause eye strain. Over -concentrating on the screen can make m kids forget to blink, causing their eyes to dry out and start to itch. Teach your kids to give m their eyes a rest by taking 10-minute breaks from the screen every hour, and 8 staring into the distance, or cupping their eyes with their hands. m Believe it or not, one of the most common causes of eye strain is a dirty computer j screen. Don't forget to clean yours often! ® Eye strain can also be caused by reflections from overhead lighting, nearby lamps A or windows. Try adjusting the contrast on your computer screen and tilt the screen | slightly downward; if objects cause screen reflections, reposition the computer } and/or rearrange the surroundings. | Watch your kids for signs such as general discomfort, headaches, blurred vision, or 7 minor vision problems that may surface due to computer use. If these persist, take wa your child for an eye exam by an eye doctor (optometrist or ophthalmologist). They @ will not only check the child’s vision but also his/her eye health. It's important for a computer users of all ages to have regular eye exams. ‘Dr. Victor Hawes ~ Optometrist 4748 Lakelse Ave. 4 2438 Poulton A ‘Ave. “Ferrace, By Ce URED aa i aetna “Houston, B. During October, optometrists will educate their communities on a wide range of top- ies about proper eye care and the importance of “g regular eye exams throughout life. The public awareness campaign will begin with the need for a child’ s first eye exam by age three almed at providing clear vision and detecting con- ditions such as strabigmus and amblyopla (lazy 2 eye}, “In some cases, early detectlon makes treat- 2 tment far easier,” said Dr. Allen. “If left too late, it ts often difficult or impossible to help the child.” The child’s family health history will also tell the optometrist a great deal, and together with the atlent's condition, help determine how often an eye exam is necessary. 2 ae As the child grows to adulthood, periodic eye exams will help ensure normal visual develop- pas ment. Later in life, the exam will focus more on determination of age-related problems. ‘This could #& range from the need for bifocals, to the detection of @ cataracts, glaucoma, and even high blood pressure or diabetes,” said Dr. Allen. * The first signs of numerous conditions are often Bm spotted during an eye exam, allowing for treatment to begin promptly. People with diabetes face af number of vision and eye health problems, includ- ing fluctuating vision, eye muscle weakness and aj potentially blinding condition known as@ retInopathy, ie Eye health is also of paramount importance to # contact lens wearers due to the complex relation-@ ship between the lens and the eye, and the poten-§ tial for harm to the eye from misuse, It is impor- tant for all contact lens wearers to follow thelr eye a doctor's instructions and return regularly for eye é health examinations. 2 Another area of concern patients frequently ask about is laser eye surgery. Optometrists often refer % patients for eye surgery and provide pre- and post- #@ operative care. However, people interested in this # procedure, and knowing whether or not they are i suitable candidates, should discuss the matter fully with their optometrist.
