Many mothers received a phone call or flowers, a card or a thoughtful letter. If your mother lives nearby you may have visited her this past Sunday. Perhaps you even took her a gilt. These things are good and right. We owe much to our mothers! They deserve to be honored. They need to know that we love and appreciate them, The problem is that be mother's day! In Exodus 20:12 we read the following commandment: “Honor your father and your mother." There are no dates attached to this commandment. It doesn’t say, ‘‘honor your father on the third Sunday in June, and your mother on the second Sunday in May.”’ “God expects that we honor our mothers (and fathers) every day! The word honor means “to regard or to treat with respect, duc obedience and courtesy.’’ { fear that there arc many mothers today whe are not so treated — especially those mothers who are getting up in years. Too many moms are stuck away and forgotten in some home for the elderly. It is true that many of them need the kind of care that can no longer be provided by their chil- dren at home, But please, please, if your mother is in an institution, don’t let her golden years become her loncliest years! ‘Honor your mother,” In John 19:25-27 we find one of the most touching scenes in the life of Christ. As He hung on the cross, His eyes wandered over the crowd. One figure arrested His at- tention. At the foot of the cross stood His mother, supparted by the disciple John. Looking into her grief-stricken face and then upon John, He said to her, ‘Dear woman, here is your son,”’ and to John, ‘‘Here is your mother.” In His dying hour, Christ remembered His mother, Amid all His physical pain and mental anguish, He still thought of her, and made provision for her. Christ’s example sug- gests that we should regard it as our duty to respect and provide for our parents. If God’s love is in our hearts, our mothers and fathers will never fail of receiving thoughtful care, One last thing. On this earth, mothers aren’t forever. Don’t wait until it is too late to tell your mom how much - she means to you. Don’t wait until it is too late to say, ‘I love you.’? You don’t even have to wait till mext May. Make every day Mother’s Day! The above article is a personal opinion and does not necessarily reflect the views of this newspaper. No to.land mines. A YOUNG cydisi'left Vancoiner lasi'week of a fourne that'll take him to Prince Rupert by early next month." Ray Li, a Red Cross youth volunteer, is cycling 5,500km through the province to raise public awareness on the use of land mines around the world. There are an estimated 110 million mines scattered in current and former war zones, causing untold damage to their victims. The Red Crass is one of the organizations raising moncy to help the victims. Considered cheap as tools of war, land mines cost be- tween $3 and $30 each and remain deadly long after hostilities have ceased, One-third of the casualties of land mines are women and children. It costs between $400 and $1,000 to render cach land mine harmless. Li will be passing through Terrace June 1 and spending the night here before ending up in Prince Rupert. He's making appearances at each of his stops. SECOND TO NONE! Whatever the style, whatever your budget — you can find floral designs Jor every occasion. ay . AFT!
