B10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 19, 1995 Spirit of charity spreads IF YOU DONATED money to the Canadian Cancer Society last spring, you may have helped a local cancer patient travel to Vancouver for treat- ment, The Terrace branch of the Cancer Society is going door- to-door this month, canvassing for donations.. They want to remind you that the people you’re helping when you make a donation are your friends and neighbours. The emergency aid division of the local cancer society helped nine Terrace residents travel to Vancouver to receive treatment last year. Martin Eys was one of these people. He travelled to Vancouver last September and stayed at the Canadian Cancer Society Vancouver lodge. ‘I was there till mid- October, undergoing radiation treatment,’’ says the 65-year- ald Eys. “But the treatment only lasted five minutes, and I was there all day, so I got bored awful easy.” In order to say thanks to lodge and to the Canadian Cancer Society, Eys, a profes- sional gardener, volunteered to do a fall gardening tune-up at the lodge. **They were willing to spend the money on tools, so I was happy to do a little garden- ing,”’ says Eys. He pruned trees and shrubs, and turned the soil in between radiation treatments. Staff at the lodge estimate the charge for this service would easily have been between $700-800. Eys is back in Terrace and is hoping to go back to work this summer, as a silviculturalist. i cad ES butoakat PROFESSIONAL GARDENER Martin Eys does a little volunteer gardening at the Canadian Cancer Society lodge in Vancouver.
