TERRACE — Prince Rupert’s school board has voted unanimously to install condom dispensing machines in the district’s junior and senior secondary schools. The decision two weeks ago makes Prince Rupert the second northwest region to make con- doms available to high school students in 2 bid to prevent the spread of AIDS, Trustees pointed to a survey of parents of Prince Rupert high school students, which indicated 72 per cent favour installing condom machines. Northwest school boards have been addressing the ques- tion since December, when the Skeena Union Board of Health urged that the machines be in- stalled. Terrace and area trustees have so far made no decision on whether to make condoms available in Schoo! District 88 schools. | Queen Charlotte school board trustees voted earlier this year to install the machines. The two northwest school districts have joined several other boards across the province in moving to install the machines, Earlier this month Kitimat trustees voted against installing the machines by a 6-1 vote. Of the northwest school boards, only Smithers and Ter- race trustees remain to deal with the issue. Terrace school board chair- man Edna Cooper said last week the condom question won't be ignored. “We're nat going to let it drop,”’ she said, “We are going to make a decision.” Local trustees heard the opi- nions of some local counsellors Caught in store TERRACE — A local man caught red-handed in a January break-in at the Terrace Co-op has been convicted and sentenc- ed to 18 months in prison. Police officers at the March 6 ~ trial said Aaron Jeffery Albert Young apparently entered the Greig Ave. store through an unlocked rear door on the night of Jan. 11. Young then tripped a silent alarm prompting officers to at- tend. Crown prosecutor Paul Kirk said RCMP found Young | inside carrying two large backpacks filled with cordless drills. ‘The accused claimed he fell asleep in the store and was just ' returning the merchandise to the store’s lost and found, ” Kirk added. Provincial court Judge P. R. Lawrence didn’t buy Young's story, finding him guilty of breaking and’ entering with the . intent to commit a theft, . Lawrence pointed to. Young's. previous record of break-and- , . enters in ‘sentencing, him to 0 18 months in jail, ©” ': at a closed door meeting nearly two months ago, and then tabl- ed the issue. Cooper said the trustees want to seek the opinions of more parents, students and teachers before making any decision. She said the board is continuing to meet privately with people. “We're listening to the opi- nions of anyone who wants to talk to us about it,”” Cooper ad- ded. The Skeena Union Board of Health also called for increased AIDS education in schools, and the release of the provincial government-sponsored AIDS video. The Skeena Health ‘Unit’ § medical health officer said three of the five AIDS carriers in the northwest who tested positive last year were teenagers. Dr. David Bowering said the pro- portion of youths here who are HIV-positive is much higher than anticipated, and said it isn’t known how many more are infected but haven’t been tested. ~ LINK WINDOW LINK WINDOW LINK WINDOW LINK 25% OFF ABBEY HORIZONTAL & VERTICAL ‘BLINDS Ask for details about our other specials LINK WINDOW LINK WINDOW _LINK WINDOW _LINK Make a Fashion Statement, With.
