James Cook und the scientists aboard the “Endeavour” were determined to get the answer. After completing thelr work in Tahiti—the plotting of the transit of Venus, Cook prepared his crew to carry out the secret orders he had received before leaving England. The" Endeavour" was readied. ' provisions placed aboard, and on July.13, 1769, the expedition prepared to sail for the south in search of a Great Southern Con- tinent. But, two of the crew members were missing. They were Royal Marines. , They had become so enchantec with the island of Tahiti and the beautiful native girls- that they did not want to leave this paradise. However, they were rounded up and each received 24 lashes to bring them back to reality. There were tearful adieus as the ship sailed with additions to her complement: a Tahitian Chief, Tupia, and a priest, Taiata. Many more had begged to go along but were refused. For a month Cook and his crew explored the islands north- west of Tahiti. He named them Society Islands. It appears to have been u happy experience, but Cook's orders were to sail south to the 40th parallel and seek out the elusive southern continent. He did not find it. Finally, Cook headed west to New Zealand, discovered earlier SPATSIZI— CANADAS - by Erich Hoyt By Ron Gadsby by another great explorer. Tasman. Cook was to survey New Zealand's coastline and deter- “prine its size. ; Tasman had only seen its eastern coust and hus proficred the theory that it was part of the great unknown continent. Cook's surveys punctured this theory. . When the “Endeavour” turned westward after her fruitless search for a southern continent. she sailed for five weeks before spatling land. Cook had promised a bottle of rum to the man who first sighted land. He also promised he would name the place after him. - . It was 12-year-old Nicholas Young who won the honors after making the first sighting. Cook kept his word and named it Young Nick's Head in October 1769. It is presumed that young Nick did receive the bottle of rum and helped in its disposal! ’ From October to December Cook sailed around New Zea- land's North Island charting its coasts. . In January 1770, the “En- deavour” underwent a refit in New Zealand's Queen Charlouc Sound. From February to April he charted “New Zealand’s South Island thus proving that it was certainly no continent. Cook also discovered that the natives were far less friendly than the Tahitians. While they had a similar language tothe Tahitians— Chief Tupia could converse with them —they were unfriendly and were not atbout to he intimidated by the exploring “whites”, : It was not long before Cook received positive evidence that they were cannibals too, and proud of it. This fact did not allow the ex- pedition members tosleep easily. us it can well be imagined. However, after an initial skir- mish—some bird shots were fired to bring the natives in line —there were no more serious incidents. The irrepressible Danks and his artist-colleague. Sydney Parkinsun, made extensive sur- veys of the island's flora. Point Venus, near Papee of Venus. + Parkinson's drawings were €x- ‘tremely beautiful. He was dis- appointed at the lack of new virielies of plant life but exuded excitement at the mere fact that they were there. . - With the job completed ‘as directed, Cook debated whether Lo sil east or west to England. He wanted to sail east at a southern huitude. to determine once and for all if there was a * southern continent. However. it was the wrong time of the year to utke an the wind-swept southern climes and the “En- deavour’ was due for sone tender. loving care. By sailing westward, around the Cape of Good Hope. there would be shelter. if required and places to refit. if necessary, The decision was made af April 1, 1770: head north westerly. By following this course, Cook and his expedition also had the opportunity of visiting New Holland. today known’as Aust- ralin. New Holland had already been partially explored but it still provided a great enigma. Cook. of course, could not turn his back to this challenge. He had to take 4 loak. Next: The New Holland Insult.
