They never learn. Take the case of Herr Paul Hellyer, who bolted the Liberal ram pasture to form his own “Action Canada”’ aggregation of opportunist political misfits, consisting of all shades of reaction. Collectively, the “‘action’’ this Hellyer outfit espouses is not one whit more or better than that of the Trudeau administration or the Stanfield hopefuls, an abundance of wordage, but totally barren of any constructive or beneficial action. Individually, however, a different picture, with heavy overtones of fascist and dictatorship ‘‘solutions”’ for Canada’s growing problems. Just recently Hellyer has come out openly with a McCarthy-J. Edgar Hoover line of the kind of ‘‘action’’ he envisages. ‘“‘There is too much communist subversion in Canada,’’ quoth Herr Hellyer, ‘‘and it must be curbed, lest greater disaster ensue.’ To solve this alleged menace, Hellyer is calling loudly for some sort of a ‘“‘commission,”’ royal or other, to stem the tide and alert Canadians to the ‘‘danger.”’ Hellyer of course, is not the first political corpse that has called for a curb on his political grave-digger, and likely won’t be the last. But against a world tide of historical social change, this miserable ‘‘King Canute’’ will fare no better than his highly numerous predecessors. Even Washington’s ‘‘Mad Bomber’’ Nixon is learning that lesson, the hard way, in Vietnam and Indochina— and in the economic chaos such anti- Communist adventures create at home. The world, and Canada, has paid a heavy price for such stupidities and the crimes against the people which result. On that score alone ‘‘Action Canada’’ becomes a dead duck, a rotting carcass! When it comes to “‘harboring”’ criminals— a very selective type of criminal, Canada holds a very unenviable position. Ex- nazi war criminals, wanted for crimes against humanity by their own people in their native lands, have always found a safe haven in Canada. Successive Establishments in this country, Tory or Liberal, have always ‘‘closed an eye”’ to their crimes, hopeful of finding them ‘“‘useful’’ in times of economic or political crises, and invariably turned a deaf ear to any and all requests for their extradiction to the scene of their crimes. In the evolution’ of such a ‘“‘haven’’ for major crime, it should surprise no one that U.S. administrations have come to regard Canada also, not only as a ready source of resources grabs and monopoly ownership, but as a dumping ground for its highly-placed criminal and other shady elements, who it must get off its hands temporarily, until the stench of its political or other crimes, ‘‘blows over.’’ In this of course the ‘‘co- operation”’ of Canadians Establishments have always been assured, its own immigration laws set aside, and the ‘“‘welcome’’ mat set out to greet the latest criminal ‘‘guest.”’ The recent case of one Pershing Gervais underscores the point. The U.S. Justice (?) Department ‘‘used its influence in Canada ‘“‘to have this informer lodged safely in Canada, got the Canadian Minister of Immigration’s ‘‘permission to get around immigration laws,’’ got the “‘GM’’ auto monopoly to give hima _ “job” at ten or twelve grand per annum, just to show he was no ordinary “‘vagrant with no visable means of support,’’ and generally kept him comfortable until the U.S. again require his special brand of ‘‘services.”’ There were some ‘‘red faces’’ in Ottawa, not because of the cold weather, but because their part in compounding a crime had been aired publicly (for once). * * * “Your Social Credit Government”’ with its entire cabinet entourage of actors is presently touring the province, with the taxpayers footing the bill of course. In this pre-election demonstration on “how your government works’’ only the gullable are impressed, the others, by far the great majority, are beginning to wonder just what the Legislature is for or about. ‘‘Aren’t all the peoples’ representatives elected to the Legislature, the governing body and the Opposition, the government, so why tour only one small segment of it?”’ That thought might have held good decades ago, but not today, and least of all in the theory and practice of the Bennett- Gaglardi-Peterson triumverate of Socredia. To that holy trinity and its government hangers-on, the Legislature and the main body of its elective representatives, is an annual, if albeit an unavoidable post to be ignored or got rid of as soon as possible. And, opines Wacky, ‘‘why spoil the show?”’ FOR ALL YOUR TRAVEL NEEDS Contact: GLOBE TOURS 2679 E. HARRY RANKIN The special vested interests promoting a Third Crossing of Burrard Inlet were defeated in their first attempt by an aroused public that demanded improved public transit, not freeways. But now these special interests are at it again. This time they’re using the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD), where they have a majority, to try to save their scheme. The GVRD, on the motion of Alderman Halford Wilson of Vancouver and Mayor Art Langley of West Vancouver, de- cided to request the federal government to appoint a special task force to review proposals for a Third Crossing. And so anxious are these freeway promoters that they appointed one of their group; Frank Bunnell, to the task force even before Ottawa had officially agreed to it! Citizens of the Lower Mainland made clear in past months that they don’t want a Third Crossing because they know it is the key to a plot to impose a gigantic freeway scheme on the Lower Mainland. But the special interests (land speculators, real estate interests, big tunnel construction firms) do want it because for them it means a pile of money. They don’t give a damn how much it costs the taxpayers or how much damage it does to our environment; all they are interested in is the huge profits that go’ with the freeway scheme. The purpose of the task force, as seen by its promoters, will not be to study whether or not we need or want a Third Crossing. It will start from the false premise that we must have one, and will only ‘‘study’’ what kind of crossing it should be. The backers of the Third Crossing and the freeway scheme have made this quite clear. GVRD chairman, Mayor Ron Andrews of North Vancouver ‘Take over Mac-Blo lands for new Nanaimo port facilities’ The Greater Nanaimo Civic Affairs Committee through its chairman Bert Ogden, has written to the Harbor Commis- sion in the island community protesting its plans to develop new port facilities at the expense of marine life and the general environment. The Civic Affairs Committee points out there is available land nearby along Northumberland Channel from Dodd Narrows out to the end of Jack’s Point (with the ‘exception of Harmac millsite and Hooker Chemical) which is practically vacant. Most of it is controlled by Mac- Millan Bloedell. tree farm license No. 19. The remainder is being held for purposes of land speculation. The committee says the as- sessed value of the land is a mere $27,290.00 and the total tax was a measly $1,669.54 in 1971. “It is pretty ridiculous to dig up and block the estuary nearly half way across when there is ample land not too far away,” District, supported the motion to establish a task force because “it is the fastest way to get a Third Crossing”’. Alderman Wilson of Van- couver. said the task force ‘‘will ensure that the Third Crossing issue is ekpt alive and not simply allowed to die’’. Both Aldermen Wilson and Broome said ‘‘it must be assumed there is going to be another crossing’’. These statements and this ap- proach fly in the face of public opinion. This is democracy in reverse. Mayor Bob Prittie of Burnaby and Mayor Henry Anderson of Richmond both opposed the motion. I did, too, of course. HEMT TINY \ BS “eS the letter says. “Sufficient land required for an industrial site and deep sea shipping facility should be acquired from MacMil- lan-Bloedel or other land speculators by whatever means necessary including expro- priation.”’ Ogden’s letter urges that city boundaries be extended to include not only the Nanaimo River estuary, but Jack’s Point “Sorry, Crumbum...! 1 still can't see what you are driving at...” (Although not a member of # GVRD, | attended the meeting® place of one of the Vancouve aldermen who was absent.)
