CPF Page 2 Canadian Parents for French British Columbia Chapter PSN Enrollment up Ew While official B.C. Ministry of Education statistics are not yet available, CPF-B.C. Chapter has obtained preliminary enroliment figures for both Immersion and the Programme-Cadre de Fran- cals for the 1930/81 school year. There are presently about 4348 students enrolled in immersion programs: 3803 In grades Kin- dergarten through 7, early-entry immersion; 366 In grades 6 and 7, late-entry immersion; and 179 In grades 8 through 10, from both early and late Immersion pro- grams. There are approximately 632 students In Kindergarten through grade 7 In the Pro- gramme Cadre. Figures for 1979/80 were: 3141 In immersion and 213 in the Cadre. This represents an In- crease of 38.4% for the two im- mersion programs (early and late) and 196.7% for the Programme- Cadre—an overall Increase In intensive French language pro- grams in B.C. public schools of 48.5%. This school year early immer- sion Is offered in 30 schools In 16 districts, late immersion in 9 schools In 4 districts, and secon- dary Immersion in 4 schools In 4 districts. Because In some cases more than one program Is offered at the same place, the total In- volvement In the province is 56 schools In 24 districts. Last year there were programs in 42 schools in 19 districts. Early French Immersion ts being offered for the first time this year In Maple Ridge, Port Alberni and Saanich. New schools have been opened in Nanalmo and Vancouver to handle in- creased enrollments. The tiny district of the Gulf Islands is offering late immersion for the first tlme to a split 6/7 class of 28 students. The Pro- gramme-Cadre de Francals has been newly implemented in Na- naimo, Richmond, Terrace, and Vernon. The first students have moved on into secondary school In Lang- ley, Surrey and Vancouver, while this fall 58 early and late immer- sion students joined Coquitlam’s lead classes at Malllard Junior Secondary.
