COUNC JUL 30 1979 MEMORANDUM Members of Counci2 — Juky 25th, 1979 Mayor J.M. CampbeLle The plight of the 'boat people' was discussed at the Regional District and the members voted to support the Committee set up by the City of Vancouver, There is a set number that will be accepted and it 4s a Federal Goverment-Individual sponsored set-up. Apparently, the number wikk be controLled and spread out over the years so that they can be more easily absorbed. Because of our 'No Grant' policy, TI hesitate to recommend that Counctl give money towards this profect. Also, because it is taxpayers! money and there i mixed reaction to the situation, there is some agneement that Tax money not be used. T woued make 2 recommendations: 1, That a policy be accepted until December 31st, 1980 that any City-owned house that becomes vacant be twmed over to the "Boat Peop£e" Committee rent free. Maximum use of any house should be 2 years. 2. That the Mayor's Office be made available to accept donations for the cause. It would be a subsidiary to the one in Vancouver, chatred by Afdenman Bernice Gerard. It would ensure that all monies would be used comnectty and that a Tax receipt could be obtained. INC/w
