\ 1 “op AB - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 29, 2006 illage wants short road - through lava bed park THE NEW Aiyansh village government wants to build a road through the Nisga’a Lava Bed Memorial Provin- ‘cial Park to provide better “access to the village. from the Nisga’a Highway. It. would be about .1km in length and lead off at the southern end of the Nisga’a Highway’s “Y’ . intersec- tion in the park, says New Aiyansh village official Ed- ward Clayton. The route would chop off about 5km in travel distance from the current access which takes a circular route . into the village. . .. “We've had an environ- mental assessment done and the road ‘would have lim- ‘ited environmental. impacts which could be successfully mitigated,” Clayton added. ° ’ The additional route into . the village would provide an alternative in case some- thing happens along the main highway. “And the travel distance’ Grants revive women’s centre from the health centre in New Aiyansh to Terrace would be shorter. That’s one of the health and safety ben- efits we’ve identified,” said Clayton. The planned road would follow the footprint of an old logging road, reducing its overall environmental impact. - A _ public consultation meeting was held last week in Terrace because it in- - volves taking out a portion of a provincial park and it. will be up to the provincial cabinet to approve or deny the project. _ Parks planners estimate the park land that would be turned into a road amounts to0.8ha. - The wanted new road- might be short but its path crosses several jurisdictions meaning the New Aiyansh ‘government needs the bless- ing of the Nisga’a Lisims - Government and the. provin- cial government. programs By DUSTIN QUEZADA THE TERRACE Women’s Resource Centre has re- - ceived much needed monies that will allow it to resume offering “workshops. under _ the guidance of a new pro- gram director. Kim Besharah, who pre- viously worked with Terrace _ Anti- Poverty, will direct ty two " projects. . She~ replaces Frances Birdsell, who held the part- time position since 2004 and who had been amongst its founders. The .centre had been closed and unable to offer . ee since thersummer::... + "society waited for “”” proviiicial ‘and federal mon- ey. The provincial . monies $15,000 from the Law Foundation of B.C. - will be used for a 12-hour-per-week series of workshops that will ‘un from January to May 2007. The $25,000 from the: federal Ministry of Status of Women will be used for an- other series of workshops to ‘be determined by Besharah. The federal ministry had not signed off on any pro- posals for women’s centres since the Conservatives took over government in January so the successful application came as a surprise here, “We were really sur- prised with the funding,” - said board member Rhonda Edgar. “We didn’t expect _the cheque.” The women’s centre for . several years has lacked an operating budget, meaning it could only function when it received money for specific programs or activities. That’s why the centre's building on Park Ave. has been closed since early June and office equipment and files moved across the street to the Family Place which began as an adjunct of the centre. The women’s centre. so- ciety owns the Family Place building. But the women’s centre will use its own building, which is owned by the city, when needed to run specific programs. - “We're just restructuring so we can offer.more servic- ” said Edgar. » The society plans to use , the women’s centre building ‘to conduct the law founda- tion-sponsored workshops: and those Besharah chooses to,run with the federal mon- ey. , Besharah says the legal workshops will cover a wide range of topics including bankruptcy, restraining or- ders, taxes and alternatives through mediation. The federal money will pay for focus and discussion groups for women in areas of safety and domestic vio- lence. “We welcome involve- ment from all’ women in the community and the sur- rounding areas,”. said Be- . sharah, adding the program will be open to their sugges- tions, —_ Approval from the Lisims . government was granted earlier. this year. Clayton’ said the project has been on the books for the past 20 years. _ The most recent cost es- timate was. done in 2003 and the price tag then was .- | ‘responsibility of New Aji- $150,000 for every tenth of i » ernment a kilometre. If approval is given to take the route out of the pro- vincial park, New Aiyansh would ask the federal gov- money. Clayton said road main- tenance at first would be the THE NWCC Advantage * Associate of Sciences 4pm for working people. tsubject to mininnnn enrolment * Applied Business Support.
