Perry, a 21-year-old Terrace resident and student at Cariboo College in Kamloops, is the area manager for Student Works Painting. It hives high school and college students and operates only from May through August, This is the first year Student Works has had an office in Terrace. Perry first became aware of Student. Works after seeing a company poster at school. After getting some more in- formation, she was given an inter- view; and soon after was awarded the top job for the Terrace branch. Perry, enrolied in the business program at the Kamloops college, ~ saw the posting as a great op- portunity to combine hands-on experience with classroom knowledge. "*¥-decided that it was the best thingto do - (it was) experience to go along with my business de- gree,” she says. The company is a franchise op- eration that began in Ontario 12 years ago, There are now bran- ches all across Canada and the US., with the head office for the BC. region located in Richmond. Student Works does interior and exterior painting for residential and commercial buildings. The company, which operates from May - August, hires mainly high school and college students. “We prefer to hire students to provide summer employment, ” says Perry. All employees are given a train- ing session in which Perry and her mote experienced workers show the painting ropes to new- comers.
