Bet eee = an Senne OY ee Pe ne Le Council meeting an 1 eyes opener To the. Editor; Last night (October 23) I at-° tended my first council meeting in the City.of Terrace. I must say it was a real eye-opener. Firstly, contrary to proper Parliamentary procedure, alder- man: Laurent introduced a mo- tion to not support a proposed Sunday: shopping bylaw. This negative motion should not have had a seconder, but alderman . Takhar did second the motion and discussion commenced. ‘After a few minutes of feeble attempts to justify his position, Laurent’s real issue was that he himself is in the line of work that required Sunday work so why shouldn't the retail sector have to work Sundays also. A number of the bylaw sup- porters expressed concern over ‘freedom. of choice or lack of freedom of choice. Laurent’s - choice was to work for an organization that required Sun- day work, Most of the retail workers chose retail work at the time when Terrace did not have --Sunday shopping. Now it is be- ing forced.onto the workers. A letter was received from a Safeway representative from Vancouver saying that no employee would be forced to work Sundays, Any employee in the retailing business knows that what head office says, and what _actually happens on the local scene, are in fact, all too often completely different. And besides, since when does Van-. couver influence the decisions of local civic politicians? . As the seconder, Takhar did not really address the motion. His biggest concern was closing down the beer stores and liquor outlets on Sundays. Good luck, Takhar. To begin with, the pro- vincial government would never disrupt one of their biggest revenue-generating sources, and secondly, I don’t think .ac- cessibility causes drunkenness. Apparently, alderman Cooper . slept through all of the presenta- tions. A number of the presenters emphasized the fact _that they chose to live in Terrace for its unique life style, away from the influences of large ur- ban centers. Cooper’s few com- ments relative to the issue were to the effect that Vancouver was wide open for shopping so why not Terrace, Is that acting in the . best interest of our community? It’s unfortunate that the deciding vote was left up-to Sheridan. He stated that in the © last two weeks leading up to this meeting he visited the majority of businesses in Terrace to get a feel for what the retailers wanted. I’ve talked to a number of retailers myself, including the Co-op, a major player in this business community, and they didn’t recall seeing Sheridan. So, who was he influenced by? Obviously not the home-grown, - long-time businesses who have contributed so much over. the years to our community. I was pleased and proud of the Big Brothers, Sisters seeking board members Contributed by _ Teresa Brinkac _.-& number of individuals have gained provisional status as a board of directors for the Ter- ‘ race area Big Brothers and Big Sisters affiliate. This would not have been possible if individuals . and small businesses in our com- munity had not donated time - and funds, However, for our non-profit organization to gain permanent status and provide the service _which is needed in our com- munity, more individuals from all walks of life must step for- ward. . In order for this Organization to gain permanent _ Status and service our communi-. ty, our citizens must come for- ward and volunteer their time. Those interested in volunteer- ing please contact Jenny Green or Teresa Brinkac by Nov. 13.. Our annual general meeting will be held on Nov. 21 in the base- ment of the Terrace Public: Library. She promised the voters that she would uphold the wishes of the Terrace residents as expressed in the 1987 referendum on Sunday closing and she stood ‘by thiat conviction. . T-was-also pleased with alder- man Hull’s sensitivity and con- cern. in recognizing the impor- tance of the family unit and the need to do whatever. we can to tighten that bond rather than constantly introduce roadblocks to disrupt that which is so im- portant in. strengthening the family unit. His Worship Mayor Talstra has a good understanding of values that count in our society, especially honesty: I wish to thank and commend him for that. The results from last night’s meeting are disappointing to say the least. I strongly concur with the suggestion that those. who are opposed.to Sunday shopping ‘and those who would rather not have to work-on Sundays should avoid supporting those places of business who support and pro- mote Sunday shopping. In closing, I refer again to the term ‘‘freedom of choice’’ which was used by those, op- posing.. the ..restricted . Sunday hours, If all major stores remain open Sundays, it will force the . other stores to open regardless of their convictions. Is that freedom of choice? I guess it is. They could choose to remain closed on Sundays and eventual- ly close their doors for good, which appears to be the goal of the major chains. | — L. Gosselin, . Terrace, B.C, Surprised, honored To the Editor; . We were surprised and honored to be named Business Executives of the Year by the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce, All the work and ef- fort by the individuals involved in organizing the event went toward making it a very memor- able evening for us. But according to - Chatelaine magazine, my lips are the latest thing. Well, they’re not exactly saying © “Stephanie Wiebe, of Terrace, B.C., has the ‘in’ lips for 1989’? — and they’re calling — them ‘‘bee-stung’’, instead of big fat lips as I’ve always refer- red to them, but evidently famous women all over North America are having collagen in- jected into their lips to make them resemble mine. My Grandma Mary had these “‘bee-stung’’ lips, and in adol- escent days I used to stare in the mirror, comparing my lips to hers. I hated her lips, especially on my face, Accord- ing to my judgment, these great swollen red things overpowered any other interesting facial features, My Aunt Lorraine had a lovely slim delicate mouth, usually lipsticked in a glamorous coral.
