| ABE KARME | Abe Karme, one, of British Columbia’s pioneer labor and Communist figures, passed away February 7 in his 88th year. His funeral last Satur- day was attended by over 200 comrades and friends who came to pay their last res- pects. A lifetime socialist and ac- tive participant in labor’s struggles, Karme fled his na- tive Finland in 1902 to escape persecution by Tsarist author- ities for his activities in the labor and social democratic movement. While a young man in his twenties Karme took an active part in the formation of the first labor and socialist movement in Finland. | Arriving in B.C. in the fall of 1902 Karme immediately threw himself into activities among the Finnish peopis. He helped establish the Finnish community at Siorntula on Malcolm Island. Between 1902-5 he was a member of the Colonization Co. A skilled carpenter, at which trade he worked for many years, Karme later took up fishing and-was one of the early builders of. the Fishermen’s union in B.C. Karme remained an active member .of the Communist Party until his death, being member of the Hastings East club. His whole life was an example of dedication to the cause of the working peo- ple and socialism.
