But .what do they tell you
about Georgia in Washington?
“Sure, it’s bad. But we have a
federal constitution which gives
important rights to the states. We
can’t: interfere.”

So it is with McCarthy. “Sure,

The United States’ senator has
informed a. newspaper editor
that any paper which dares to
criticize him, or the gang of
political cutthroats associated
with him, is going to be persecut-
ed.” This startling, and _ blunt
fascist effort to frighten Amer-
ict’s newspapers was brought in-
to the open with publication of
the testimony of New York Post
editor James Wechsler at a sec-
ret hearing before Senator Mc-
Carthy’s subcommittee, which As
conducting a thought-control “in-
vestigation” of books in U.S. lib-
raries abroad.

Wechsler, it seems, had writ-
ten a few books, one of which
was supposed to have appeared
in these libraries. This was-the
pretext for calling him before
McCarthy for inquisition.

The testimony revealed that
McCarthy was not in the least
interested in books written by
Wechsler appeared in U.S. libra-
ries. It dealt exclusively with

demagogic electioneering in Wis-
consin got McCarthy into the
Senate.

But powerful support keeps .

him there and keeps him in the

ful Hearst newspaper chains and.

by the Chicago Tribune.

He is hand-in-glove with the
Catholic hierarchy.

He is the darling of the fascist
American Legion.

He is financed by giant cor-
porations.

He has had public endorse-
ments from Harold Stassen, a
member of Eisenhower’s cabinet,
and Guy Gabrielson, chairman of

New York Post editorial policies.
It revealed nakedly that what
concerned McCarthy was the
Posi’s opposition to him, its ex-
posures of his crooked dealings
and political fakery.

For this, Wechsler was severe-
ly red-baited despite the fact
that he is himself a vicious. anti-
Communist.

The testimony also showed, in-
cidentally, that McCarthy has a
quality necessary to the fascist

mind — the ability to come up ~*

with the wildest idiocies. Thus,
Wechsler testified he had been
a member of the Young Commun-
ist League from 1934 to 1937,
and had made a trip to the So-
viet Union. McCarthy said if
he “had been Stalin” he would
have instructed Wechsler to pre-
tend he had turned anti-Com-
munist.

He wanted to know if this had
not really been Wechsler’s in-
structions, and if it had. not

been Wechsler himself who, had °

written the attacks against him-

Bernstein, Roy Harris, Rand-
all Thompson and Roger Ses-
sions.

Sheet music and recordings
of these musicians were plac-
ed in the libraries abroad by
the International Information
Administration of the State
Department.

It is estimated that over 36
million people visit these lib-
raries every year. Now theye
will be cut off from contact
with some of the finest and
best-known, American music.

Washington he did some profit-
able lobbying for the sugar and
soft-drinks interests and became
known as the Pepsi-Cola Kid.
Then he sponsored legislation

on fur imports. “Now the fur
farmers think I’m God,” he an-

_ nounced.

After that he ran a country-
wide campaign against public
housing for veterans and got
very well paid by the house
builders’ lobby.

Yet his tax returns always
showed that’ he had no income.

the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “and
still manage to eat as well and
entertain as lavishly as Senator
Joseph R. McCarthy does?”

No one bothered to answer the
question, and the tax authorities
never bothered to take action.

What is McCarthy’s technique?

One reporter called it the
multiple lie—the piling of lie
upon lie, repeated ad nauseam,
until the truth has receded far
out of sight and some, at least,
of the lies have stuck to their
victim.

When he was gunning for Dr.
Philip Jessup, the strongly anti-
Soviet U.S. delegate to the Unit-
ed Nations, McCarthy produced
the charge (among many others)
that Jessup had been associated
with a “Communist front” or-
ganization, the American Law
Students’ Association.

No one had ever listed the as-
sociation. as “subversive,” though
it is easy enough to get on the
“subversive” lists.

McCarthy justified his charge

’ by pointing to the usual printer’s

trade union imprint on the as-
sociation’s notepaper.

“It is union label No. 209,” de-*

clared McCarthy, “the Commun-
ist print-shop label.” He add-
ed that the association was “af-

filiated” to other bodies desig-—

nated as “‘Communist fronts.”
Commented Dr. Jessup: “If
this particular charge is boiled
down. it shows that I was associ-
ated with an organization that
was connected with another or-
ganization that a number of years
after I had terminated my con-
nection with the first organiza-
tion was cited as subversive.”

Following release of Wech-
sler’s testimony, McCarthy un-
derscored the fact that he was
going after the press requesting
one of his so-called investigators,
Harvey Matusow, to prepare a
list of all “reds” he knows work-
ing for newspapers in the coun-
try.

‘His intention is partly revealed.
by the testimony. McCarthy
told Wechsler he would call
down the editor of the New
York Times, or any other paper,
if that paper “has been consist-
ently fighting anyone who fights
Communism,” meaning, of
course, McCarthy and his fascist
grouping.

Wechsler’s defense against Mc-
Carthy was to try to prove he
was anti-Communist. The effort
was futile, for to McCarthy and
his reactionary big business

backers even public education is

“communism.”

Wechsler committed the real
crime of turning over to McCar-
thy a list of names of people he
had allegedly known as Com-
munists when a member of the
Young Communist League. He
was thus giving McCarthy fur-
ther ammunition.

Many newspapers, including
the New York Times, have come
to Wechsler’s support against
McCarthy’s inquisition. The Am-
erican Society of Newspaper
Editors has opened an investiga-
tion. The New York Times and
some others, however, have taken
the view that McCarthy’s per-
secution of Wechsler is unjust
because Wechsler is a proven -
anti-Communist. ~ ;

They imply that this persecu-
tion is justified if directed
against Communists. But where
will this persecution end? Mc-
Carthy and his associates regard
anyone talking about democra-
tic liberty or Negro rights as
Communists and have said so.
The Times has occasionally edit-
orialized in favor of these needs,

and is not immune from heing

labelled “red.”

The stated objectives of the
McCarthy Committee — invest-
igation of books in US. libraries
overseas — are themselves proof
of the process. Since when has
any government agency the right
to: censor books under any con-
ditions? Once this right is ad-
mitted, guarantees against goy-
ernment invasion of press and
thought freedom, provided in
the First Amendment of the
U.S. Constitution are destroyed.
