Two young men who were elected to leading national posts at the 20th convention of the Communist Party of Canada, visited B.C. last week to help launch a drive against the Trudeau government’s austerity program, and to lay the basis for the building of a Young Communist League in B.C. Don Currie, youthful national organizer of the Communist Party, attended important meetings of the Communist Party in Vancouver, Victoria and Fraser Valley. At a special meeting at the B.C. party’s provincial committee last Saturday, he outlined plans for a national drive defending the people’s living standards which are the target of Trudeau’s austerity program. He told the meeting that the Communist Party nationally is geared to launching an independent campaign beamed to the working people around a program of action to defeat the austerity program and wage freeze policy. ‘‘At the same time - we will play an important role in uniting the movements of the people to fight back against monopoly’s attack.” Currie said the Communist Party will devote special attention to the needs of the working class and to building the party among industrial workers. Charles McFadden, the party’s new national youth secretary was in B.C. to meet with youth groups and to prepare for the founding convention of the Young Communist League to take place in March, 1970. Young Communist League branches have already been set up in major centres across Canada, including Quebec.
