Dear. ‘Alderman Gates:

: = “Tharik. you for your inquiry concerning our Integrated Weed Management services.
ve During ‘the course of the past. thirteen years our ‘staff has assisted many communities
.. by: reviewing their pest control prograns and making recommendations for ways to
manage ‘pest problems, including weeds, with minimum ug¢ of toxic Materials. The
- Methods. we employ are based on the principles of Integrate Pest Management (IPM) --.
a: decision-making process which enables managers to identify a ali factors contributing
‘to the presence of a pest, and te use environmentally-sound , strategies and tactics
to reduce or eliminate the conditions enabling pests to ‘survive, By. taking this
approach, pest managers can achieve cost- -effective, long-term contro] of pests with
‘minimun: detrimental}. impact .on non-target organisms such as humans, pet animals or

“wildlife.

‘Y-would be: happy to meet with you, your grounds maintenance staff, and other
interested persons’ and tour the sites where weeds are a problem. By looking at
‘the sites. I can identify the weed species and learn the history of maintenance

practices.and weed control activities taking place up to the present. Once I have
"gathered this information, Icould spend a day Working with your maintenance staff

:-to develop ‘IPM-oriented weed management plans for a number of sites. These plans

could be implemented on an experimental basis and evaluated at some agreed” upon

-. point. in the future, Those IPM strategies and tactics which prove most effective
“could. then be implemented - in other problem areas “under your maintenance jurisdiction.

The

ae The: process outlined above could occur over the course of two days.
‘schedule would 1ogk something like this: .
